We are looking at going to the Kimberleys and
Gibb River road next year, and was wondering when is the best time to go?

Hi Di & Mark
June is the best bet. With the unpredictable weather of recent years, you need to gamble on getting there when the roads are freshly opened and graded, and the river crossings down enough for your rig. With the weird weather the past few years, rain in June has resulted in closures or late opening, so travellers have to be prepared to wait a while if stranded while travelling through, or even sit it out in
Kununurra until it is opened. Come July, the place is crawling with tourists driving to fast, roads becoming corrugated by the previous,
camp groups full, and
water in falls reducing. Allow plenty of time and don't miss it - of our trips, it has to come up to the very top. Check out My
Blogs 2008.

Hi Di and Mark,
I would agree with the other answer. We went thru the GBR in early June and the conditions were ideal, not to many others on the road and still a reasonable amount of running
water in the creeks. The road was in good condition from W to E up to the
Pentecost river and a bit ordinary to the
Kununurra-
Wyndham Road. Not many stock road trains due to the export ban, but the earlier you go the less the road would have been Knocked around. I read a post by someone who went thru in early July and apparently the road was crowded, so earlier the better, within reason. Cheers, Tom
