gday
I have a 94 80 series landcruiser (GXL petrol), and I have 2 questions, first one, if the speed sensors are working but the speedo is not, should the cruise control still work. second question, what else could be at fault if the speedo is not working, tacho and other instuments are working,
Thank you

Its the speedo sensor on the gearbox.
Common problem.
You can get after market ones for it. I think
mine was about $140 a few years back. The genuine one is just under $400 from memory.

I have fitted 6 or 7 cruise controls in recent years, and your cruise control should work, if the the speedo is broken.
I could be wrong , but my understanding od cruise control, is they are a tacho, that will hold revs, by opening the throtle to hold the selected revs. The mear fact that you are doing a certain speed is secondary to the theory of it all.
With modern vehicles, it is computer controlled, but with your 80 series, it is manual actuating.
Not sure about the spedo bit, but if you know speeds vs revs, then you have no problems
Cheers

Sorry Mate
That is not correct.
The manually activated ones I have installed all work from magnets, and a tailshaft or driveshaft sensor. and have nothing to do with speedo sensor units.

Early aftermarket cruise controls used magnets on the drive shafts. Later model aftermarket can be taped ito the vehicle speed sensor, fitted lots to Ford Couriers. Factory fitted always use vehicle speedo sensor.

No all cruse controls work off the speedo sender unit but on the 80 series it does pick up a feed from the speed sensor on factory systems or later electronic systems.
I would say if your speedo isn't working then the sender may be faulty or
check ALL (under bonnet and inside) fuses to see if there is power on both sides.
If you have an email address or fax I can send you the information when I get back at our workshop.

ok tested the cruise control it is working, tested the speed sensors they are working. could it now be just a simple speedometer guage that is the problem, and will that prevent the cruise control from setting.
thanks for all the replies
