Called in the the Blue Heeler pub at Kynuna (about 360ks from Winton) a few weeks ago and stayed the night. Carelessly I left my sponge bag. To my delight it was returned to me on the Gold Coast, no charge by the staff. You would have "Buckley's" of this happening at any city hotel.
Great classic pub with great staff.
Thanks boys and girls.

G'day,
Nice to hear of honest business owners.

That reminds me of what happened to me last year after staying in a motel on my own in Mulwala to do some contract work. The very nice motel owners found a ring in the room after I left & sent it back to me in the mail assuming it was my wifes (who was NOT staying with me).
My wife opened the letter containing a note from the motel owner that the ring must belong to the lady who was staying in the room with me. There was no one else in the room with me!
We both got a good laugh together over what could have caused a real argument over the identity of the "other woman"!!
Took the ring back with me the next week & it turned out that it belonged to someone that stayed there before me. The owners were most apologetic but we all thought it was pretty funny.

Cheers
Stu

A couple of years ago made the Blue Heeler on a sunday by design to enjoy their country cooking, so I thought.

After setting up camp in the park out the back went over with another couple to have a few drinks .
Enquired what was on the menu and the lady owner said , she had catered for a wedding the night before and tonight was "cooks night off'! !

I told her I had driven all day to eat there but, as I could do nothing , thought I would settle in for a few beers.

A few stubbies later she came over and said "do you eat prawns" . She went on to say she had forgotten to bring out the prawns at the wedding and they were in the coldroom to be thrown out.

Do I eat prawns ?? Yes I do.

The next thing she appeared with 2 large trays and I mean large, together with 2 same size plates full of beautiful salads.

Settled in and had a good feed and as more visitors arrived and stared in wonder at what the four of us were tucking into I invited them to join us.
They willingly accepted our offer and a great night was had by all.

I have dined out on that story many times.

Pedro

Hi Old Fellow,
You must be nearly as old as me.
I was on my way to the Gulf in '66 for a spot of fishing and we stopped at the Blue Heeler for a refreshing drink. It was a dirt road in those days and we were suffering after driving all night in the less than dust proof short wheel base Landrover with the army style soft top. We had no sooner started to drink our beers when the barmaid rushed around and took our glasses back and thrust cans into out hands.
A cloud of dust heralded the arrival of the bus to Isa and there were not enough glasses to go around. We finished our beers, bought a case of XXXX and continued up the NEW beef road to Julia creek.
Have been back many times since and always enjoy the Surfboat BBQ

We had a beer at the Blue Heeler Pub and listened to the radio there as Neil Armstrong took a walk on the moon way, back in 1969. We were on our way south in a clapped out VW over those rough gravel roads with cattle grids which stuck out 6 inches above the ground.....them were the days...lol

I ‘buzzed’ the Blue Heeler in a plane (another life!) in my flying days as Mrs Landy spent quite a bit of time on a property in the area when he was much younger – she’s still young BTW... But I have never had the opportunity to visit it...

So on our recent trip to the Gulf we stayed out the back overnight and had a great meal, enjoyed the company of some other travellers and a couple of locals. The locals suggested we drive down the stock route to Winton instead of the highway and take a look at some old ruins, a great way to spend the morning...

Places like the ‘Blue Heeler’ is one of the reasons we love travelling and visiting these establishments, great to enjoy a beer with friendly people, and brought back some memories for Mrs Landy.
