I recently bought a Jayflight offroad campervan that seems in good overall condition.

A couple of minor issues though. Looking underneath I find it has slipper springs (heavy duty with helper springs for heavier loads. I understood that shackle types springs should be used in offroad units - an issue or not.

I have 12v and 240v power to the little Electrolux fridge (haven't checked gas as yet) and have it switched on on 240v. It is not getting cold at all. What can go wrong with the 240v side of things.

Tomorrow I will connect the battery charger up to the battery and switch the fridge over to 12v and see what happens.

Thanks

Garry

Hi Garry,

I was told to turn the three way fridge upside down for a day and then try again. Pulled it out of the timber frame and after a day of sitting on its top it started to cool again on 240VAC (in its normal upright position).
Hope this helps.
cheers, Peter

I will second that. My 3 way was not cooling much at all. I removed it from my camper trailer and turned it upside down for a day.
After that it seemed to work perfectly.
If you relax at a faster pace you can get more relaxation in for a given time.

Thanks for those comments - if it does not work on 12v or gas (need a new regulator first) I will have to do that. I have an old 3 way camping fridge and turning it upside down then on its side and upside down again made it work well.

Garry, slipper springs are known to part company with the trailer, I think you have answered your own question.

Yes - I guess I was hoping I was wrong - I was surprised to see an Offroad unit had slippers. The front spring mount is pretty light on as well, though the springs themselves are very heavy duty (as are the shockies) with helper leaves under the main leaves.

Cheers

Hi Gerry

Some years ago we purchased an old so called off road model wind up camper (something like a Jayco Dove but unbranded). The vendor assured us the fridge worked even if it was a little slow to cool but he had only used it on 240 v. He put cold stuff in it and headed off for weekends away with the children. It must have worked like an esky because it didn't cool for us at all. After trying a new element, the fridge tech ascertain gas lines (fridge gas not gas fuel to fridge) blocked and unrepairable. We purchased a 12/240 v compressor fridge to fit the gap, and together with a solar panel used as portable when we stopped to power a deep cycle battery. We had a much better power arrangement and a really good fridge, so that may be an option for you if you can't get it to work.

Thanks - I also have a 55l compressor camping fridge that I was going to use as a freezer sitting on top of the 3 way - was going to use the 3 way as just a fridge to keep the milk and butter cool. I believe these electrolux 3 ways work well on gas.

Cheers

Hi Garry (and apologies for mis-typing your name above). So long as the fridge does work on gas. With the blockage ours was diagnosed with, which he said was quite common, it wouldn't have cooled on any source, but it was in a very old camper. Even if it doesn't work, with a 55 litre freezer, you could freeze a few bottle of water and rotate these in the fridge to keep the it cool. How will you power the freezer?

In our present caravan, with adequate solar power, we have a built in 150 litre compressor fridge and for long trips use a 30 litre Engel as a freezer.

Thanks - have now run it on 240v, 12v and gas - it is heating up at the back but doesn't seem to be cooling - is running on gas at the moment - fridge temp is 10 but temp in the van is 4 so is a bit hard to tell if the fridge is cooling. I will leave it on for 24hours and see what happens.

The van is not quite level as it is a bit of a slope and even with one side jacked up it is still not quite level so this might be having an impact - but should still be getting some cooling.

I tend not to stay in one place more than one night so powering the compressor fridge has not been an issue but I will have to sort something out before too long - however an hour at idle in the car will charge the battery/s if they are not completely discharged.
