Hi all
Image Could Not Be Found
After years of stuffing around, I finally have a turbo in my 80 series. As the old motor was getting tired, I opted for a transplant from a written-off base-model 100 series. This was the same engine (1HZ) but with a DTS watercooled turbo bolted on. Would have liked to put in a 1HD-FTE engine but was more $$$ than I could scrape up. Anyway, I'm happy with the outcome. Fuel consumption has improved a little, but what has really changed is driveability, especially when towing.
My question is what sort of fuel consumtion are others with an aftermarket turboed 1HZ getting when touring? Since this engine is new to me, I'm keen to find out if the injectors or pump need any attention.
Cheers

My brother has similar setup , although he found some of the fittings a little restrictive and has made improvements - actually its almost a work of art.

Just returned from 5000 km tour from Victoria thru to Mt Dare and on to the twins and return.

Total consumption was approx 18lt/100km - has 285/75 tyres and its pretty heavy.

My 4800 petrol patrol consumes only 17 on similar trip , mind you he can run a percentage of no cost chip oil as fuel.

Thanks Robin

So far I have only driven 3200km heavily loaded, which used 18L/100km. This weekend I hope to do a trip with a light load to compare.

Yep, I have a HZJ75 with a DTS water cooled turbo and tow a 2 tonne pop-top van (plus extras) and while I don't keep a detailed log of fuel consumption I reckon I get 13 to 15 lts per 100ks empty and 18 to 20 per 100kls towing. A lot of variables John, speed, terrain, head winds. I sit on about 90kph that's the 'Cruisers "Purple Patch" and while others claim better figures I'm content with mine.

Thanks for the info. I set the cruise control on 100km/h and got 18L/100km towing a heavy load. Have yet to do a run empty for comparison, but so far it's looking as if it's in the same league as others are getting.

Hmmm, I like the sound of 11L/100km. The best I ever got with the old engine was 15!

Hi Jiarna,

I've got a 1HZ in my 100 Series LC and a Garrett water cooled after market turbo fitted with about 6-8 pounds of boost to keep the EGT down. I've been tracking my fuel usage for over 100,000kms and average about 13-14 l/100kms empty and 16-17 l/100kms when touring with a roof rack on the top. The fuel usage didn't change much between the pre and post turbo installation, but that's because the boost level was kept down. I'd expect the fuel usage to change as you increase the boost. Have you dyno tuned the motor since installing it? Might get some more power out of the upgrade if you did. I also have a 2.5 inch mandrel bent exhaust to help the engine breath better - helps with the power gain from the turbo.

Cheers

Thanks Rob

I don't know what boost it's running as I've not fitted a boost gauge, but when I had it dyno tuned the tech said he reduced the power slightly to improve fuel consumption and longevity as per my priorities.
Your fuel figures sound about the same, so I guess the engine is in good shape. Might leave the injectors and pump for later. The engine has done 160K with 70K of that after the turbo was fitted. I'm thinking I'll get the pump and injectors checked etc at 200K.
Cheers

You should know, you've been everywhere, man!
LOL.
Sure looks a little like the Pascoe northern side though.

Well spotted! It was the Pascoe, during our cape York trip in 2008. I'm not sure why the caption "Exploring near Tilmouth Well" come up when you hover the mouse over the pic though ...

Forgot to add...THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO GET IT DYNO TUNED. Your playing Russian roulette if you dont.

Thanks Bigfish
The setup was professionally installed and dyno tuned in the 100 series by the late owner, so I'm confident it was done properly. Just to be sure, I had it dyno tuned again once it was installed in my vehicle. The tech said the engine was in excellent condition, and he dialled back the power a little to improve longevity and fuel consumption.

if you haven't installed a 3" exhaust system already then do so, it will make a big difference to how it runs, i know it did with mine.
my fuel figures would be usless as i tend to have a heavy right foot, keep under 100 and it makes a world of difference to your fuel figures.

I try to keep to no more than 100km/h so that's OK. I have a free-flowing mandrel-bent 2 1/2 inch exhaust system that I had behind the extractors on the previous engine, and the tuning mob said I'd probably not see enough benefit with a 3 inch system to justify the cost.
Given that I live in a hot environment, I'm wondering if an intercooler might be a worthwhile addition.
Cheers
