Mt Samuel to Jackie Junction

Am travelling the Gunbarrel late Sept/ early Oct and was wondering if I should turnoff at Mt Samuel and take the Heather Highway to the Great Central Road or continue on to Jackie Junction and then down.
Anyone have any advice?

Probably a good idea to check your permit conditions. That may be the deciding factor.

That section of the Gunbarrel is closed (not open - sacred land) however I saw a DVD recently on the Gunbarrel Highway - Wiluna to Warakurna where they went through to Jackie Junction and down. The DVD was dated 2006 so maybe there has been changes in the past few years.
Thanks for your input.

Gidday Ralph

Travelled west from Jackie Junctiion to Wiluna a few weeks ago. The track between Heather Highway intersection and Jackie Junction has many, many long washed out sections. Basically the track has become a creek in many places. Most are negotiated easily with care and there are diversions around the worst bits. But it makes for slow going. Then again, slow going through a washout may be preferable to going a bit faster over corrugations.

Cheers

Rocco

Hi Ralph

As you are aware, you have two options and both are as good as each other. The actual road down from Jackie Junction to Warburton is a closed road and the actual track that you need to take is around 30 kilometres west of Jackie Junction.

If you are not running moving maps, eg Ozi, this turn off is harder to find and is less travelled compared to the Heather Highway. This track will bring you about 1 kilometre east of Warburton and a simple matter of turning right when back on the Great Central and you are then in Warburton. If you take the Heather, it is a well defined track and when you hit the Tjirrkarli turn off, it is then a super Highway all the way down to the Great Central.

Either way it is great country and have a great trip.

Cheers

Hi Ralph,

You could try the Warburton North Road, from Jackie Junction to Great Central Road. A bit different, follows the original Gunbarrel Highway and gets you a bit closer to Warburton.
