This is a serious query, believe it or not! I am hoping some of you can come up with some suggestions to help us fix our caravan bed which groans and creaks every time one of us so much as moves!
I am talking here of turning over, getting in and out of the bed and any other movements either of us makes. (We are a couple on our eary 60's, not particularly heavy at around 65kg and 84kg).
The base is a series of wooden slats and not solid and there's a thickish innerspring mattress on top so its comfortable enough, just embarrassingly noisy as the sounds can be heard outside the van! Its a Jayco sterling outback van.
Thanks in anticipation of helpful solutions,
Heather

Hello Heather & John, now that Ros & I have finally stopped laughing..we need to get serious about your...er...problem. A similar thing occurred to us...ok, your turn to laugh.. Investigation proved it to be the outside frame which is attached in the corners with Allen Head screws. A tighten up stopped almost all the noise. This is our
home cot but construction may be similar. If it doesnt work, try increasing the dose of
good red before retiring. Good taste & our sense of decorum precludes us from offering the obvious responses, but others may be tempted...:))))))).......oldbaz.

Thanks Baz.
Very cheeky, I knew YOU would answer me in this vein!!! Believe me, if it was only when we were 'doing it' it wouldn't be so much of a problem as I would just hang out the
sign ...'if the vans a rockin' etc' . lol
I will relay your advice to John re the 'screws'.
Unfortunately I gave up red wine a few years ago so the advice there won't work either. Maybe I should take it up again.
Regards,
Heather

ypou could get a candle or soap , candle preferably and rub it alonng the track the slats run in, that acts a a lubricant and may cause a lot less squeaking. i use to work as a furniture repairer and believe me, " when that
sign is on the door you can bet the beds' on the floor!"

Try some talcum powder, or something like Selleys "Ezy Glide", under the end of the slats (between slat & frame), & see if that makes the problem go away...

Although I have not tried it as yet myself, I too have been advised to use Baby Powder on our creaky timber ply base...

Hi Daza,
Yeah
well.... maybe 30 years ago....The neighbours would not believe that one the next morning when we emerged from the van!
It's not embarrassment which worries us about the noise, rather it disrupts OUR sleep as we tend to wake up when one or the other get in or out of bed, turn over etc.... very annoying!
Cheers,
Heather

A couple of years ago we were camped in Tassie. The van next to us started rocking and creaking to a very rythmic beat (not to hard to geuss). A few us sat around the next morning waiting for them to arise and we were going to appluad them. To our amazement our the door opened and a guy in his 90's hopped out followed by by similar aged lady with a walking frame. We were rolling on the ground laughing. Your story bought back memories and now I'm thinking we might have got it wrong LOL. Can you "screw" that slats down so they don't move.

Hi Josh,
Or maybe you were right .....and they only looked old! Age is only a state of mind I believe!!! lol
Will mention your idea about screwing down the slats to my husband and see if it is possible.
Thanks and regards,
Heather

Had the same problem in our Jayco Heather. Fixed it by taking out the slats and cutting about 3mm off the ends that go to the centre of the bed, give the cut ends a good squirt of Selleys Ezi Glide. It seems that the slats were a tad too long and rub (squeek!) against the central Aluminium rib, really irritating!
Hope this helps.

Hi Heather,
You should put it on where it rubs and in the cracks.
It will provide lubrication and stop the squeaking.
Cheers Wilko

Fair dink people, good old candle wax, on bed frame where the slats are. while you have the candle out, you may as
well pull out all of your wooden draws and give where it slides a rub, as
well........
be generous and apply liberally...
it will do a better job then any other wet or dry lube...

i ripped the slats out of ours and used 140mm wide x 20mm thick treated pine base board instead, screwed them to the frame and it was much more comfortable and much less noise.....

Hi Paul and Mal,
Yes, we thought about doing that but decided it would make the bed so much heavier to lift, even though it does have the 'hydraulic? thingys' which make that easier to do. Maybe we will do it as a last resort. We will give some of the other suggestions a try first, but thanks anyway.

Heather

sorry forgot to add i installed an extra gas ram to the bed, copied the original one as it would barely hold it up on 1. after that it was no problem.

spray on cooking oil, i use it on hinges, door locks and other stuff, works
well, you can spray it on the wood and it will stop the squeeks where it binds against the metal, screw heads will squeek in wood, the cooking oil will help that..
Cheers

Hi to everybody who responded to my calls for help with the bed noise.
I am happy to report that we appear to have rectified the problem by moving the hinges at the bed head a couple of mms. to create a small gap between the plywood and metal.
The noise was caused by the plywood strip at the head of the bed rubbing on the metal mattress frame when ever there was any movement.
Thought this information may be helpful to others who are hesitant to ask the same question I did on here.
And yes, we did get a few laughs at some of the answers!Maybe I should have asked it in the friday funnies. lol
Regards,
Heather
