My clutch slips when changing down gears, is this adjustable or does it need changing. It makes a churp noise when changing down and using a bit of engine braking.

I have an 2003 HDJ100R, 5 speed manual.

Thanks

Hi Brooka27, you will have an hydraulically activated clutch, the system works in a similar way to the breaking system, push the pedal which pushes fluid from a master cylinder to a slave cylinder which in turn activates the clutch assembly. In this system as the clutch plate wears the wear is taken up by the fluid in the system so no need to mechanically adjust it. However with this type of system you cant tell how much wear the clutch plate has suffered and usually the first indication that there is a problem is when the clutch starts to slip. Usually you first notice the slip when you try to accelerate in third or fourth gear. Its a bit unusual to have this happen when changing down gears.

It has 160000 on the clock and has towed a 22ft van around OZ and done some heavy beach work with 285/75r16 on which may have high lighted the problem. It also churps when reversing the van up a drive way.

This interests me as well - I've done 227,000 and mine does it when changing down and my instinct is that it needs replacing and from what I read up above - I'm in for a new one.Mine's a 2000 5 speed manual. More money.

I first noticed mine once I had the larger tires fitted and started towing the van around OZ, hitting the East coast up steep hills that my take off torque was seriously reduced and barely took off from a stand still start on a large incline.

with a 22 foot caravan and a 3 tonne vehicle, i would've put in to high range till off the hill. it's asking a lot of a clutch to move 5 plus tonnes of vehicle's. so something to think about. on a hill high range or even low range till your over creast if your taking off!
