I am heading that way in October, does anyone have recent experience of the road coanditions. The plan is to tow our off road van in if the road is okay. Also any comments on the Gorge would be appreciated.

We are heading that way June next year, driving from the Undara Lava Tubes to Cobbold Gorge. Had made contact with the folks at Cobbold Gorge and as along as its not rained recently, towing a van in is fine. 2WD is also fine.

My parents just towed their 18 ft van over this road this week with no problems.

We went that way about a week ago. The first five kilometres from Georgetown were very corrugated and then ok from there. Just take it easy. You can always stay at Forsayth and day trip it to the gorge if you like. We found the tour ok, gorge was good but the tour guide so so.

John. With an off road van you will have no problems. It is just another gravel country road that sometimes is rough and sometimes recently graded. In fact the kind of road the off road vans were made for.
The gorge is unique and not to be missed. Really no point in staying at Forsythe. Once you have got that far you may well be over the worst of the road. Depends on the grader schedule. The visitor facilities at Cobbold Gorge are good. Meals were good value and well prepared last year.
Don't miss the Info centre in Georgetown. Very knowledgeable people and a great mineral display (charge applies).
