I would like to know if any one has put a roof rack on top of a pop top caravan and how they went about doing it. I want to carry my Tinnie on top 3.7 mts. Is it legal to do so.Cant carry it on top off my car, racks wont take the weight,to costly to set up new ones with a boat loader.
Cheers The Crow

Your better off keeping your tinnies in a fridge. They could get rather warm on the roof of your caravan

Hope you are built like Popeye as if you have to lift the roof every night with boat on wont be much fun.
May have to reinforce the struts that hold the roof up as
well

hi stephen H
imho i dont think a pop top roof would have excess inbuilt strenght to carry extra weight it would also compress the seals to bursting point and the down weight on the side walls could also cause big problems on rough road conditions
theres an old saying
the last straw broke the camels back
and this could very
well come into the picture if you overload the poptop structure and its real designed purpose
personely i wouldn't go down that path
but then someone has to push the boundarys further that's human nature
are you game and prepared to risk the outcome ????????????

Thanks for your comments. Spoke to a caravan repairer and he seemed to think it would be Ok as long as the roof latches were secure enough and possibly put a couple of extra latches on.Only doing short trips till I retire and buy a new car that will take the boat on top Have a collapsing boat trailor to move around with whenI get there.
Cheers

Persoanlly I reckon you spoke to the wrong van repairer.
Even if the Pop Top roof could support the extra weight, that extra weight would certainly take the loaded weight of the Pop Top over it's plated ATM and thus make it illegal.

I saw one of the fold a boats in action last weekend and was very impressed, especially as he had a 60cm flathead in his bucket.
I'm building a Plywood and Epoxy Resin tinnie at the moment which I hope will come in at under 50kg. Might be an option for your situation also.
