We are considering travelling to
Silverton via the above route.
According to Google maps,
Balranald to Mungo is 146 km with a travel time of 4hrs 38min (32 kph) and Mungo to
Menindee is 210 km with a travel time of 4hrs 58min (43 kph)
The above info. suggests the roads (?) are a bit rough. Has anyone travelled these roads recently? Is the info reasonably accurate? Would there be any problems towing a Goldstream off-road wind-up van behind a Y61 Patrol?
I will be grateful for any
feedback I receive..
Ted

Ted, why don't you call the park rangers for Mungo. They should have a good idea of roads leading to and from their park. You will probably find that some parts of the NP are closed. Some roads in that area were under water for quite a while.

G'day Ted, the road from
Balranald to Mungo is a
Balranald Shire road, so maybe drop them an email or a phone call.
There has been a few arguments over who maintains the road from Mungo
campground to
the entrance to the
Visitors Centre because it is inside the National Park.
Good game of handball there between the two parties.
cheers
Dave

Hi Ted
The loop road around Mungo is closed due to water damage; or was still closed when the Parks website was updated three days.

G'Day Henpecked
We have travelled that path five or six times over the last seven years and the roads from Mungo to
Pooncarie (Top Hut Rd), both east and west side of the river up to
Menindee from
Pooncarie will vary according to when they have been graded. Unless there has been lots of rain within the immediate past they are generally pretty good and when they get rough you just drive according to conditions.
When we did these trips we had a Subaru Forester towing a Camper Trailer and a Compac 402 van, in good, bad and wet conditions and we always got through OK, albeit sometimes a bit slow.
A telephone call to either the local Hotel or the Cafe on the river will get you the latest information, unfortunately the
Information Centre at
Balranald is not always reliable, from our experience. I know this isn't current information but it is generally consistent, any sort of wet weather above a light shower can destroy the above but the phoen call will resolve most issues.
Regards
Paul H

An aside, I always double
check the driving times with whereis.com.au, which seem to be more accurate than Google Maps.

Hi
I travelled from
Menindee to approx 25km south of
Bindara (via Tandou Station) yesterday, The west side of the river.
There are some rough patches but I did see others towing vans through there including someone with a Subaru Forester.
I was doing 50 - 70 km/h on most of the road in a patrol not towing anything.

Just got back yesterday. Roads are fine. Towing no problem. Mungo can be toured with organized guide otherwise not worth the hassle of going. We did
Mildura Pooncarie Menindee Louth tilpa Bourke cobar Ivanhoe all on dirt in the last week, bush camped all the way. A lot of the roads are in the process of being graded. You should have no problems. As always low tyre pressures and sensible speeds are the key.

Thanks to everyone for your replies and information. I am awaiting a reply from
Balranald council.
I think it is a case of "nothing ventured, nothing gained", so unless there is a wet weather event in the meantime, we will give it a go.
