Hema Navigator Hn5i

Hi, I have read a few threads on the Hema hn5i but would like if possible some more comments from others who have purchased one and have used in their outback travels and in city areas. Any info would be appreciated,Thanks.

Bill,

I use mine for work in some areas that are not normally covered with a normal street nav gps. The Igo street nav has most of the roads shown and has only been lost on the Leichhardt Highway 10km north of Miles.

I used it last week on Igo to travel to Townsville from Chinchilla and it had no issues.

The offroad mapping works well IMHO and I tend to use that more than the Igo so I can plot my routes.

Cheers Kev

Hi Kev
Thanks for your input.I will be going on trips both to some some big smokes and off road in the near future. I have only been to Brisbane twice in 40 years which was a hair raising experience"if you have any hair"so a GPS will be a lot of help.I live about 90ks west of Miles and traveling to places I would like to see, it would be handy for a bit of navigational aid also.
Thanks again,cheers,
Bill

So you are in the Yuelba area?

I will be driving through there tomorrow about 7am and 12pm and possibly again on Friday around the same time if you want to catch up.

I have some work in Roma and Blythdale to do.

Cheers Kev

Bill,

FYI: I just enabled all the Reviews on the shop system so you can now see all the reviews that were temp hidden for the last week. The reason they were all hidden is that I transferred all the shop item reviews into the new review system and this created 300 forum threads - I decided to hide them for 1 week to stop the forum showing 15 pages of reviews in one slab last week when I did the import - I have now enabled them all so you can read and see each of them - if that helps.

Just click on the item link in your Question above and it will take you directly to the item - scroll down to the review section and click on the word review to open all of the reviews we have had loaded.

Only problem I have with the HN5i is the IGO. If you are wanting to find an address in say Townsville it is no good just putting in the street name and Townsville, you have to know the exact name of the actual suburb as well, and often it is hard to know if one suburb overlaps another. Other than that the off road is a lot more user friendly on the HN5i than the HN5.

Old Fella,

I have the same issue with a Tom Tom so I think most street nav units would be the same in that respect.

Old Fellow,

I can't agree with you re the Off Road function on the HN5i being more user friendly than the HN5.

I have a HN5 which has been recently upgraded to "EzyOzi" from the default OziExplorerCE. The difference is simply the "customised screens" that have now been applied.

As one who was familiar with the "standard" OziExplorerCE and had no issues with it,
the biggest problem I now have is that instead of simply tapping the screen when adding a waypoint of your current position, you now need to tap the second icon down the right hand side, which is NOT user friendly IMO.

Each to his own I guess.

Well that is one of the few things that Route66 does well....called free search...just type in the street name and it will list everyone in Australia with the one closest to your GPS location on top of the list.

I use both the IGO and 4WD maps on mine.

The IGO is generally good - easier to enter addresses and waypoints than my Navman, and especially easier to make changes enroute. I like the way I can select the camping spots and it will put in the address, and showing service stations has also been handy at times. It was also surprisingly accurate at predicting when I would reach my destination (even on long stretches).

However, was disappointed when IGO couldn't give me directions from home to Marree. It had a map of Marree, but wouldn't find a route to it as 'destination is isolated'. And yup, we found it OK , no need to tease :-)

I find the ability to zoom in or out on the 4wd maps is handy, as is the tracking. Not having used this kind of system previously, I found that putting in my route in advance looked to be waaay more effort than I was prepared to put in. So I don't use it for that. I also found it was still helpful to have a paper atlas handy as it is just easier to read for looking at the wider area.

YMMV

Hi YMMV
Thanks for the rundown on the Hema,Overall I think it's the GPS that will suit me for what I want to do. Kev,you and others are happy with. I have a Navman 80 that I use to get me out of trouble if I have to go to any cities as I am an old country boy where life is not as fast as our city friends.Yes I to use paper maps if my bush knowledge fails me, so using both should be handy tools.
