Hi,
Another question about Tassie, I will spend the New year in Hobart, and couple more days to explore the surroundings, and I was wondering which is the most convenient campsite there with power sites. I can only find couple: Barrilla, Treasure Island and one near airport. Any suggestions would be most welcomed. Apparently there used to be also Elwick cabin and tourist park, but cannot find anything about power sites there.
Thank you
LER

We spent time at Treasure Island a couple of years ago, found it very convenient. Not fancy but clean and the city bus service stops at the front so it is easy to travel in and around Hobart on Public transport. We travelled all day for about $3 each. There is a pub just nearby that has great meals and a large shopping centre for all your groceries just in the next suburb and also on the bus route.

We stayed at Snug caravan park

Good facilities.
About half an hour by bus to centre of town.
Great butcher shop at top of street.

I'll go for Snug too. Nice..quiet, right on water. Only a dash up the road to town, &
only a walk up to the pub..nice meals. Would need to book for peak periods.
cheers.....oldbaz.

Hi LER

What about the Hobart Showgrounds? We did not stay in Hobart, as we stayed with friends south of the city.

Hi LER,

We stayed at New Norfolk and drove back into Hobart from there. It was a busy place and because we didn't book, had to stay unpowered so it pays to phone ahead. Nice little place and very pretty, beside the river.

Snug is about the same distance away from Hobart, to the South, and is also a possibility but it also would be very busy over the Christmas period so essential to book. We spent a few days there when we were in Tassie earlier in the year. The Butchers shop in Snug is worth visiting for sure!

Buses run into Hobart from both New Norfolk and Snug at regular intervals, although we didn't use the service.

There is camping with powered sites at the Showground which is closer and cheaper. Haven't stayed there so can't tell you what it is like but it is in Camps book, and I think would be fine.

Regards,

Heather

We stayed in Barilla caravan park, over near the airport last time we were there. They run a bus to the city and back for New Years Eve.

If you are planning to go to town for NYE then I strongly suggest you book ahead for the Taste Of Tassie as that's the best place to be, and if you leave it too long you'll miss out.

Yes, that is one of the reasons I am going to spend the NYE in Hobart instead of north (I will have to drive back up north and then back south/west, just because of the Taste of Tassie). I will start booking all my sites as soon as work out the final trip plan, it will be 3-4 weeks and I will try to see it all (yes I know I need at least 3-4 months, but do not have them)

Even if you can't book caravan sites at least book the Taste of Tassie. I'd also suggest booking a reserved table for the evening. We couldn't and the old pins were absolutely buggered by the end of the night. :(
