about the springs of Toyota HDJ78

Hi everyone!

My Toyota HDJ78 has coil springs at front and leaf springs at rear. Now I use 235-85/R16 size tires and would like to change them into 255-85/R16 ones. When I do it, I have to lift up my vehicle, I think. I would like to find the spring for lift-up, which is more comfortable to ride on and has more durability than the normal (Toyota Genuine parts). If anyone has a good idea about it, please let me know it.

Thanks for paying attention to me!

I see the OME is very popular and gives good results.

Here's a picture of one of my OME springs

Image Could Not Be Found

People will utilise their vehicles differently however this spring did not not live up to the promises written in the brochure.

Cheers
Alan

So what spring are you using now? The OME on my Patrol have done over 200,000k including Canning, Cape x 2 and lots of High Country trips all on the same springs and shocks, and a lot of those k,s is towing my camper.

I carried spare rear shocks on the CSR trip but did not need them. Guess its the way you drive.

I'm using the same spring, as they were rightfully replaced free of charge and I haven't yet sought an alternative. However I now don't have the greatest level of confidence in them. Yes, it's probably the way I drive however if the brochure was anything to go by you should be able to go to hell and back with them. This was not the case.

I might add too that the failure of this spring could have been partially due to the failure of one, and subsequently both of my front shockies, which were also high end OME products.

The band you choose is not as important as getting the spring rate right for your application. Find a 4wd specialist who knows suspension, not just a shop that sells there own brand of suspension and discuss your requirements with them in regards to the way you want to use your vehicle, eg, touring, hardcore, towing, daily driver etc. It's not easy to get all the required information on a forum.
As far as brands go, EFS offers the most superior warranty on the market, Lovells are all australian made, Ridepro offer one of the best off the shelf ride qualitiesfor non heavy laden vehicles, dobinson have one of the most selection of spring rates, OME... ummm are sold by ARB.. and they're probably all around the same dollars.

Hi, Dan! Your suggestion is absolutely right. Thanks to your suggestion , I have got to know it is better for me to talk with a 4wd specialist who is very familiar with HDJ 78's suspension. However, I have no idea about it. So could you kindly tell me who is a reliable 4wd specialist in Australia if possible?

Thanks a lot, Dan!

Hojikoji,

Are you running these 255/85R16 on split rims by any chance?

Now I am using one-piece aluminium wheel rims. In case of using 255/85R16, I will put the tires on them.

Thank you,

G'day hoj, I have a HDJ78 and changed the suspension as soon as I got it, 1 week of the original was enough. Anyhow, go to a suspension specialist. We finished up with Koni Shocks all round ( I have used them on other 4WD's and like them) with King coil springs on the front with APM (i believe) Parabolic springs on the rear, my Troopy is quite heavy in the rear, draw set Kaymar rear bar 2 spares and so on. The Parabolic springs were very good initially, but have sagged a little and are not resettable, the ride unloaded has suffered a bit as a result. They will be replaced with Kings leaf springs of a rate suggested by their technical people in the near future. King Springs have been good to me in the past and I feel that BHP steel and Aussie manufacturing may be superior to imported quality? The suspension is 50mm approx higher than standard and will be retained with the new Leaf springs. Just my Bob's worth, cheers. Kanga.

Thanks a lot for your useful information, Kanga!

Unfortunately I am not sure at all who is a suspension specialist.

If possible, I would like you to recommend a suspension specialist or a shop which is very familiar with the suspension of Landcruiser (especially HDJ78).

Cheers,

hojikoji

Hoj look in the yellow pages phone directory, WA Suspensions, Wilkinsons Suspensions, Pedders Suspensions etc are the type of crowd in WA that do it. Good Luck with it. Kanga.
