GPS Systems

i Guys,
I am looking to upgrade my oziexplorer. Currently running laptop in conjunction with 8" touch screen and a mouse gps.
I am looking at repalcing with a stand alone system on the dash (nissan patrol).

I have looked at several including the hema one. Wondering what your thoughts are on some these systems.

Happy 4wheeling, Nugget.

Hi Nugget

I use a 7 " touch screen GPS i bought from Ebay.

link to GPS

It runs OziCE perfectly, very happy with it. Simple to use - best of all don't need to have the laptop in the car anymore.

Cheers

Will

Thanks Will,
I will have a look at that one when I get, I will be away for a few weeks and I'll follow it up.
It looks, the price is a bit of a worry as it seems pretty cheap but you are using and obviously you are happy with it's performance.
Thanks again, Nugget

I dont think it's really all that cheap.

You will need to purchase and install OziExplorerCE and at least NatMap 2008 digital maps to get the best out of it.
Then if you want more detailed maps you need to purchase and install the Hema range of digital maps.

The Hema Navigator has it all installed and ready to use with backup services for both hardware and software.

That is not all that cheap - what you would expect to pay these days for a generic 7" GPS.

They get much cheaper if you look.

Can you give me a hinti how it's done?? I do have a CE password.

Hi Wombat

no you don't have to be a computer whizz - i was surprised actually how easy it was !

the device comes with a 4gb micro sd card, of which only about 500mb is taken up - this leaves plenty of space for your oziexplorer maps. i have the full set of oz maps, inc great desert tracks etc and it easily fit on the remaining 3.5gb - perfect !
the unit comes with a usb cable , so what you do is:

1. plug the usb cable into your computer ( i have a mac and a pc, i chose to use the pc for this, as the oziCE file is not mac compatible )

2. run the oziCE demo file that you download off the oziexplorer website - and extract the files to the device's memory card which should be visible in 'my computer' if its connected to your pc properly. this will install the program on the navigators memory card.

3. unplug the device from your computer, and go to 'settings' , then 'navigation path' - this will be set to IGO (the default navigation program for the device )

4. change navigation path to OZICE - you will find this in the Oziexplorer CE folder on the devices memory card, it will navigate you to the right place automatically.

5. go back the main menu on the navigator, and click " navigation " . this will now open Ozi CE , instead of IGO, the program the navigator is shipped with.

this should have taken only a minute or two, and if all goes well, ozice will open and a demo map will be displayed, you can even test out moving map mode to make sure all works ok !

then all you need to do is plug the device back into your computer, and copy all your maps to the 'maps' folder on the device, which is found on the memory card, then in the 'oziexplorer folder' . (this can be done in the windows explorer, or 'my computer' )

piece of cake ! if you do decide to buy one, feel free to send me an email buttons1@adam.com.au , and i will be happy to help you out if you get stuck at all

not sure why, but price looks to have gone up slightly, i paid $118 in mid july, looks like its $128 now, but i am very happy with this navigator, there are cheaper ones out there, but i was happy to pay the extra for this one to get it from an australian seller who guaranteed me that Ozi CE would work on it. as i mentioned before, the screen is a bit dimmer than my garmin, but for the price, i can live with that .

happy navigating !

Will

Hi

There are lots of them on Ebay, and the one i bought (link above) is fantastic, can't fault it except for one thing - i wish the screen was a little brighter - it can be a bit dim when in bright sunlight. Still a lot easier to read than a laptop screen in sunlight though. I solved the problem a little by buying this sun-shade from ebay

For cost these days the Nuvi 1490T is worth a thought, with the latest City Nav' 2012.1 it shows all the SD Tracks and will do routing across the French Line, QAA, WAA, K1, Knolls, etc. with Shonky installed you get the Lake Poeppel detour and will zoom down to 300m and lower without blurring, of course Shonky won't route but niether will Ozi'.

GPS Brash Imports I bought one of these a few weeks ago and it hasn't missed a beat for me on two remote trips. Comes already installed with natmap 1:250,000 maps and ozi plus IGO street nav.

No affiliation just a happy customer.
