Not sure exactly which lights these are. If they are the 7" round jobbies, the best thing I did to my HJ60 was to ditch the original lights, put in Hella inserts with the H4 globes and then a wiring kit to get the volts where they need to be. Instant daylight.

They are the 7" ones, i guess they would be the "no name" copys of Hella inserts, i have heard the wiring harnes is a good improvment, should really look at it also eh.. how much were the Hella units ???
Cheers n thanks

Joe, I don't know how much the H4's are now, but when I got mine they were cheaper than OE from Toyota.
I had to replace one because a roo stuck his head in the way.
Obviously I got a pair of H4's.
cheers

I am not really keen on the HID's in low beams, in spots yes but i really hate it when other are coming towards me with them and it is simply to bright to see anything, i have heard others make that comment also so in respect of "others" i probally wont go them in normal lights ... yet ....
Cheers

Hella have the best light beams, i've tried many different brands of inserts and they all seem very wishy washy in beam spread and penetration compared to the Hella's which are not cheap but money well spent. Also fit the wiring kit and get some plus 60% h4 globes, don't go for the plus 80% or the 80/100 watt globes as these don't last. Hope this helps your decision.

cheers Murray

Thanks Murray, i will check out Hella pricing tomorrow, it was my worry that it may be a risk as they really dont have any "brand" so may not be very good, my HI beams are fine but i dread driving at night in any city (hate it at day!!!) so i need the best i can get i guess, i get wifey to drive at night when on hols as i have declaired it as sun down, on hols, time for drinkys not drivin ... hahaha
I very nearly brought them but thought i perhaps should pop the question first and glad i did..
Cheers guys,
Joe

Joe,
I have the Hella H4 upgrade in my 75, had it in for best part of 7 years, I agree with you on lowbeam the 75's aren't much better than a candle.
I put in 65/100 bulbs with a relay and haven't had any trouble at all.

Geoff.

Hi all,

I set up a Hella H4 upgrade in my '86 HJ60 somewhere around '92 or '93, with my own 6mm (automotive) wiring (no commercial wiring looms readily available when I did mine) and some BIG H4 globes which absolutely transformed things for travel after dark. Not that we ever did much of that - it was more of a comfort thing.

A 'roo's head put paid to the LHS headlight and I had difficulty sourcing a new Hella, so looked at a generic brand, which was made in India, that was fairly readily available through the automotive chains back then, but the reflectors really weren't satisfactory for my needs.

Eventually got hold of a single Cibie H4 conversion, so I ran a mismatched set for about 6 years. I didn't notice a huge difference in performance between Hella and Cibie, but what there was favoured the Cibie. From memory (I sold the vehicle back in 2007), Hella had a flatter glass and an extra hole in the reflector for an in-headlight parking globe, with a rubber/plastic grommet to keep water out if you weren't using that arrangement, while Cibie had a rounder glass with some raised lines in it, perhaps for lateral light dispersion and an undisturbed reflector.

The orienting/locating sytems were the main structural difference - Hella used a quite solid, welded-on, thick square "wire", while Cibie used relatively flimsy strips of sheet metal, on edge. That said, both travelled several hundred thousand kilometres without any mechanical failure and provided a vast improvement over the ridiculous sealed beams that were standard in these vehicles long after everyone else in the automotive game had gone to H4's.

Regards,

Charlie
