Is October too late for SA outback travel?

Hello all,

A little question from an overseas Oz fan!

I've been planning a visit during September, but now I can't get away from work sooner than October. I plan to rent a Britz Bushcamper in Adelaide, then spend 3 to 4 weeks out on the tracks. I don't expect to leave S.A. (other than Birdsville!).

Will it already be too hot to comfortably (or merely SAFELY) travel and camp?

My last trip was in a Bushcamper, ranging from Darwin to Kangaroo Island, in May-June 2008, so heat wasn't a concern. :)

What do you think? I need to decide very soon if I should cancel or reschedule. Any help you can offer will be very welcome!

I think you wil be fine, but I would be aware of the advanced weather forcast where ever you go as things can vary over quite a range.

We just completed a trip across lower NT expecting the 20's odd average but experienced a heat wave with mid to high thirties temperatures and down to zero at night.

Plan for all weather conditions always.

Spring is the best time to see outback Australia. If you can go see the Western Australian Wild flowers. Have a ball, relax and enjoy.

You will be fine...I have worked up through that area for the past 30 odd years year in year out. Its a great time to visit. It shouldn't be too hot and camping will be fine.

We travelled outback SA in October 2009. Ere were some hot evenings which were a little unpleasant but we enjoyed the trip.

Ditto. We did Lake Eyre at the beginning of October 2010, and found the weather very pleasant. Needed a jacket at night and first thing in the morning, and a lightweight jumper/hoodie/sloppyjoe during the day on some days.

Thank you for the replies! Sounds like conditions should be acceptable, so I have booked the flight and vehicle for October.

Now here's hoping I can get the time off work! I should know by 1 September. If all goes ahead as planned, you will likely see more questions from me! :)

You will have to work hard not to have a good time.

Enjoy
