Are the Prado's intercooled? They don't have a scoop on the bonnet.

The intercooler is in front of the radiator.

Best you have a look under the bonnet, the Prado intercooler sits on top of the motor. It has an air passage from the front of the bonnet.

Just read it in a road test on the 150 three door and it states it is in front of the radiator and there is a photo of the engine bay and no intercooler on top of the motor, so best you take a look under the bonnet of the 150 series.

The new 150 series is front mounted, the previous version top mounted.

The new ones as above.

The old Prado's didn't have a scoop for the intercooler, they had ducting under the bonnet to direct airflow from the grill to the top mounted intercooler.

The 200 series does the same.

Don't know about over rated and over priced, what you pay for is what you get.

Plus there is about $4000 of luxury car tax.

Every new model is more capable then the previous and I know I'm going to get knocked down in flames for that comment.

We have a new 200 series VX and it is unbelievably capable off road, in mud with traction aids it would surprise you.

Before we bought the 200 series we did a bit of home work re prices as everyone said they were to dear.

In 1996 a GXL 80 series turbo diesel cost $72,000 and a house cost $110,000 with wages being $35,000 a 100 series in 2006 cost $67,000 and a house cost $320,000.... the 200 series cost in 2011 $87,000 and a house $425,000 with wages being $75,000.

In 2003 a diesel Prado GXL cost $56,000 and now in 2011 they cost $67,000 with more bells and whistles.

If you compare and drive a new Prado or 200 series with a new Patrol you will see where the extra money is and why the Patrol is so cheap.

Why do you think they are over rated?

And yes I agree with you EVERY THING is over priced these days.

"...New GXL 5 speed auto....nearly $70,000 on road.....over priced & over rated IMHO."

Firstly, I don't drive either a Prado or a Pajero (as per OREJAP) so the figures below are unbiased....

Taken from Toyota & Mits website just this minute:

Prado GXL, diesel, auto, 7 seat, met paint $64,404 retail, $70,074 driveaway (QLD postcode)
Pajero GLS, diesel, auto, 7 seat, met paint $62,590 retail, $69,988 driveway. (QLD postcode).

This does not account for any 'special deals' on offer.
Well well well, it would now appear the Prado is not thousands of dollars more, like Paj drivers always bang on about (and this is a true apples with apples model compare).

Both over-priced IMHO

Have a real close look what you get in a GLS Pajero Vs GLX Prado, I had a hard look 4 years ago when I last shelled out.
You get a lot more "extras" in the GLS Pajero than the GLX Prado.

I won't critisise the Prado at all, with different family circumstances (and a better diesel) I may have bought one, but 4 years ago GLX Prado was $4k more expensive than the GLS Pajero.

Again why over priced.

What can you get that has more for less.

So in some people way of thinking a 4 bedroom house valued at $700,000 that has a pool, large sheds, new carpet and 3 acres of land around it is over priced compared to a house with 4 bedrooms, no pool, no sheds, new carpet on .4 of an acre.... hell both houses have 4 bedrooms and new carpet.

Or a new Patrol is over priced if compared to a Great Wall X240... both 4wd wagons, both diesel, both can carry 5 people, both come with 5 mag wheels, both come with a radio/cd player and 4 speakers....

Over price is a funny thing... what is over priced, price is driven by what a particular market will pay... so if the market is going to pay that price then it is not over priced, it is simply more expensive.

Mark you get Toyota reliability, quality and resale plus double the fuel carrying with more off road capabilities.

Never see Pajero's in remote areas..... always wondered why?

Ol
getting O/T to original post, so apologies twinkles.
Agreed over priced is purely perceptions based on peoples opinions. My opinion is that they are overpriced, however , the market says otherwise, or they wouldn't sell. My view (& it's my view only, not gospel) is that for the same money, and more suited to my needs, is a new d/cab decked with $10k worth of touring 'accessories' + a $20k camper trailer. I Guess it comes down to 'bang for your buck' in lieu of 'over-priced'.
More offroad capabilites with wagon? hmmm sure, but for the most part, not really an issue (esp if d/cab has diff locks incl in accessories).

Re reliablity, resale, fuel etc yes agree. What surprised me was that the Paj is now similar in price to the Prado. I merely compared the closest spec equivalent for each model.
Paj's in remote areas?? I'll stay outa that one - you can debate that with the Paj owners :)

must admit.....I've gone over to the dark side (no smiley icons?????horror) so am certainly not a Toyota devotee but........

If nothing else, Toyota will give you value for money when it comes to re-sale. The rest is opinion and requirements. Re-sale and reliability tempted me to defect to a Prado along with the availability of aftermarket accessories. Always regarded Toyotas as a bit bland and boring, having owned a 100 series a few years back but decided to take a punt on a 120 Prado. Came very close to a 150 series whilst on hols but then saw reduced fuel tanks and rear luggage space. Lovely drive though. Slightly better than the 120 but hey, splitting hairs. For once I just focussed on hard facts as they affected me and have found it an excellent towing vehicle and pretty capable in the rough stuff. Surprisingly (for me) very comfortable and enjoyable to drive not to mention the dealership availability. Still think they're bland to look at but gee, a bloody good car. Some good competition around so why not do what suits you now?

btw, a few of the blokes at Pradopoint have put bonnet scoops on and claim marginal improvements but really, you've gotta be a bit keen to bother
