Hi, Fresh water barra are edible but can be pretty ordinary compared to salt water ones. Can have a weedy or muddy taste & have known the flesh to go mushy on cooking. Not very palitable. Then again have had some beaut ones. You takes your chances. The catching is the best part. Bill

My Dad used to say fresh-water barra tasted like cotton wool dragged through mud! However, when fresh and not overcooked, my experience is that they're fabulous!

Hi Allyson,
We stayed there last year for a few days and the men fished without success however it was probably not the right time of the year to catch barra. It was April I think.
We found that none of the Qld dams which have been stocked with barra produced any while we were there. Joked that it was maybe a myth spread from Qld Tourism! lol
I have eaten barra caught in fresh water and found them superior to the 'barra' on pub menus.
Good luck!
Cheers,
Heather

G/Day Allyson
I will let you into a little secret.
We stayed there in June this year and fisherman camping next to us was catching heaps.
He camps there on a regular basis and knows the area quite
well.
With the recent rain and flooding at the beginning of the year, the
dam over flowed and the bulk of the fish was swept over the spillway.
It took him a couple of days to work this out, and he was talking to the
ranger about poor fishing at his favourite spots at the
dam ect.
When the
ranger told him about the fish going over the spillway he started fishing below the spillway in the large
rock pools.
And this is where he caught them.
We stayed there for a couple of days but I didn't fish, but we had a few given to us.
Cheers
