It would be great if there was an iPhone app or similar to help browsing ExplorOz with an iPhone.
There are so many hot links etc. that using an iPhone with the small screen it is very hard to avoid them, can get very frustrating at times.

Yes agree but unfortunately we don't generate enough funds from the site to cover cost of having the development done. We use iPhones too so know it's limitations but we think the only way we could tackle it would be to focus on one or two necessary elements to make for iphone compatibility. What should they be? And how do we cover our costs? Is the mobile version members only? Please discuss everyone - the site developments are always based on your needs and feedback (and of course our logistics). Excuse any typos I am using the iphone now and it always auto corrects the wrong things$&@"/!

I think the forum & blogs would be good, & yes, maybe for members.
No reason it has to be free either, could be an app to be purchased like any other.

Maybe you can look into a forum app like tapatalk, it is a universal forum app.

I'm no software developer so I don't even know what's feasible.

I did however stumble upon an ap recently called Urbanspoon that uses your current location to generate a list of restaurants/cafes nearby.

Got me thinking.

Wouldn't it be great if an iPhone ap could grab your current location and link in to some list of nearby POI's/campsites/lookouts etc??

You already have the fantastic "places" database. If an ap could grab your location and then say "here are all the places near where you are", I'd be a happy man.

Hi all,

Just a thought, but not everyone who browses the site on a mobile phone has an iPhone. Some use Android, Windows Mobile, etc.

Instead of going down the app development road that only applies to a specific make of phone, how about a mobile version of the major / most popular pages of the site? This seems to be quite common among sites such as airlines, etc and removes all the 'bling' that causes problems on small screens.

I currently don't use EO on my phone for the same reasons Shaker mentioned - just too much hassle.

Cheers,
Chris

Yes, after I replied to this post yesterday, I mentioned it to David again to see what his current thoughts were... and he said he had got somewhere already with moving towards coding a "mobile" version with a view to this. So I think this would be the direction he is likely to take... eventually.

One thing, if you want to send a blog to the site, you simply send an email to blogs@exploroz.com this is awesome! It's had some issues rotating pics that the iphone does sideaways but I think he just sorted that out, but the idea anyway is that you send them from location, then when back at home, open your blogs and edit them to tidying them up, retag them etc.

I know that's the otherside of this issue, but relevant to some degree.
I know we have talked of using this kind of push technology to activate a pull from the server of relevant data to your current location if you want it sent to your phone, eg. nearby places etc.

When we travel to the US in 2 weeks time (yippee!!) we are taking a pc tablet (pc version of an ipad with windows, usb etc that David imported from china) so we are testing all sorts of things on that. We will be doing a road trip, blogging and tracking so it will be interesting to see what he can make work. He has also imported some personal tracking devices that don't use a carrier network like spot or 3G etc.
