Yep.....see 'em every day. Park in disabled carpark, many sporting disabled sticker. Driver (very able) gets out, walks to letter box, shop, bottle'o etc, does their bit then back in and gone???
When I see this take place, I always make a point of looking at the sticker, and then challenging the very abled driver, (can't help me'self), who on most occasions, tells me to go back to a place I have heard of, but can't find on any map, with persons there to whom I don't recall knowing as relatives :-))) but apparently these rectums of human society know better. More of the DILLIGAF society of oxygen wasters we support :-(

Good post Axle.

Perhaps before you begin challenging the seemingly able bodied persons using the disabled parking bays you should do a bit of research and acquaint yourself with exactly what a disabled parking permit covers. There is more to it than the noticable physical impairments that qualify a person for a permit and by challenging persons without knowing their medical history could see you yourself on the wrong side of the law

Jon, I think that well bowled bouncer, went waaaay over your head, straight through to the keeper.

You are reading way too much into this very common problem.

In plain English, we are talking about people who very obviously are not impaired in ANY way. Should I talk a bit slower ????

Let me elaborate if I may.

I know of a bloke who, because he has a disabled daughter, has a valid permit and drives a vehicle with a disabled access ramp, high roof, etc.
All very legal, but he abuses the permit every day.

He drives to work alone and parks in a disabled space, because it is more convenient for him and the space is always there for him.
It is his daughter who is supposed to be disabled, not him.

Bill,

all you need to do is ring the Council and inform them of this situation. It is quite a hefty fine here in SA

As far as Today Tonight goes, I believe nothing that I hear, and about 1/4 of what I see. This program's credibility went ka-put years ago. It is just a joke now.

I used to have a cartoon on my office desk - A big burly bloke in a wheelchair armed with and axe and something else approaching the able bodied person getting out of his car in the ACROD bay, saying something like "If you haven't got a disability now, you'll have a one soon"

I had a motor cycle accident a few years ago, broke my back and pelvis amongst other things, I needed a disability permit until I learnt to walk properly again. It doesnt bother me anymore to see able bodied people take up disabled parking spaces because the number of times I went to the shops and all the disabled parking spaces were taken up by able bodied elderly people making me park all the way up the back and use my walking sticks to get to the shops. I make the assumption (I very well may be wrong) that the originator of this post is in fact an elderly person who has a disabled permit that is often in the position I frequently was. I am 34 and now able bodied, I dont mind walking from all the way up the back as it reminds me when I could barely do it all. If people can buy permits so they can park close to the shops, good luck if you can get away with it. Your arms and legs arn't painted on, start using them.

My 2 cents

I get annoyed about parking permits every day
My wife Barbara has one because of her emphycema/asthma, heart desease & 2 mechanical valves in her heart etc
I have one because of my Rhumitoid & osteo arthritis I also had a stroke a while back
I now take pics on my phone of people who park in parking spots without a permit, and pass it on the the local counsil
I do challenge people who don't have a sticker and you cant believe the excuses they give
my favorite is "I'm on a pension I don't need a sticker to park here"
or
I'm only going to be a min I'll be out of here b4 a disabled person need it " & my reply is i need it & now
A releif chef that use to come in and help out from hotel in the group, his wife works with disabled people & i saw him park in her car in a disabled parking spot at the shops
I asked him what he was doing he said i have the sticker i may as well use it when i can
I told him if i caught him using it again without a disabled person in the car i would report him & his wife could loose the sticker to do her job with.Harsh i know but he isn't entitled /
Before I had a disabled sticker i would never have given it a second thought to park in a disabled parking spot
Maybe it was the way i was brought up,respecting others

We are pretty close to this topic.
Our son is in a wheelchair and has the Council Permit, but he refuses to use it unless he has no choice for whatever reason.
It does give him the irates though when he sees those not entitled to use those spots, doing so.
He's made up some notes to put under wiper blades.

Practice now, if you're lucky, one day you may just need this Disabled Person spot.

It gives him a bit of a chuckle though to see some of the responses when ppl return to their cars while he is placing the note. He's a cheeky little bugger.

Anyway, for the rest ovus, just use your phone to take a pic with the rego No, and email it to the Council in the area concerned. They will generally follow up I believe.

If council issues an infringment, do you get a "spotters fee" for the photo? Would be a nice incentive seing how much councils make from parking infringments.

Hi All,
I'm one of those who use a disability parking bay whenever I can find one AND I have no qualms about it either.

To look at me I look just like you, totally normal, BUT unknown to you, I have an extreme lung problem that limits the distance I can walk without using my puffer to around 25-30 metres on a good day.
A friend of mine also looks completely normal but his issue is major heart disease and he is even less mobile than me.

We both have Disability stickers totally legitimately, we both qualify to have wheelchairs but I don't want to go there until I absolutely have to and neither does my friend.

I'm not saying that everyone that uses the Disability parking is legit, I know that there are some rogues out there BUT just because I look "Normal" doesn't mean that I am illegallly parked in the bay.

Just to add to your problems the Disability sticker can legally be used by a "normal" person when transporting a disabled person as a passenger.

Don't rush to jump to conclusions without first checking your facts please.

Spot on! Too often the driver is taken as the 'owner' of the permit....it may well be the passenger. Sometimes the able-bodied driver parks [with displayed permit] to pick up the 'owner' who is shopping.

I work @ a shopping centre & see this issue everyday......now "Parents with prams"...that can get seriously nasty...

Fred maybe you should read slower or read everything

Jon is correct as is Wok.

I worked as a disability officer for many years and the amount of people who commented about people on DSP or people with Parking stickers "who had nothing wrong with them" I would ask "have you seen their medical report".

There are many people with endurance issues - not psyically evident- can you identify a cystic fybrosis sufferer or an emphysema sufferer or someone with serious heart problems. They all don't limp.
I agree there would be some who abuse the privledge - I used an airport shuttle service once and the driver boasted he had a sticker- I asked why and he declared " I had a heart attack 5 years ago". He was now lifting 20kg suitcases on and off the vehicle.

Sometimes people jump too quickly to conclusions- me included

Hi all,

This is certainly a topic that gets the adrenaline going with many people - and I can't say I'm immune, either - but all too often people may not understand the circumstances of a particular situation.

Some years ago, I had the interesting experience of transporting a seriously disabled 90-year old aunt to a restaurant. She had never driven a vehicle of any kind in her life and therefore, in her mind, had no need for a disabled parking permit. There was no area available for passenger pick-up anywhere near the door of the restaurant.

Now, this person could barely walk, and then only with a great deal of pain - the kind that'd make you and me want to just curl up and die. What would YOU do in those circumstances? Let me tell you, I broke the law! And I'd do it again tomorrow, without a second thought, if the same circumstances were to apply.

On the other hand, my wife has had a partial knee replacement and is in quite constant pain with that and the myriad of other aches and pains that inflict themselves on most of us as we get older. Despite the fact that a half-hour on her feet makes walking back to the car after a visit to the shopping centre a really painful struggle for her, she does not have a permit and we do not use disabled parking spaces.

All that having been said, one of the guys from our church with a legitimate need for a permit, parked in a disabled space with his permit displayed, left his vehicle for around 30 minutes with his window down just a hand's breadth and returned to discover that his permit had been stolen from his dashboard.

Let me give you a strong tip - THAT's low!!!

Regards,

Charlie

Just be aware of those in my situation. I have a disabled parking permit. At first I do not appear to be disabled. But walk with me for a ways and you will soon understand.

The cancer I have effectively means my blood will only absorb less than half the oxygen than is normal. Any more than a few kilos of shopping and a walk more than a hundred meters and I start getting giddy and can even collapse from a lack of oxygen for the brain. Cannot do all those lovely bush walks with my wife. I miss out on heaps of good walks when we go away. Bugger it.

So I know what you mean and understand completely.

Lock them up and throw the key away.

Phil
