HI,

We have a 2006 Kluger which has been a fantastic car, we have just hit 50,000 so she is still like brand new

BUT we have just in the process of ordering a 2011 Jayco Swan Outback and with all the goodies on her we have hit the Klugers max towing capacity

So we have been looking around for 2nd hand 4wds

Can anyone give advice on 1999 Landcruiser 4.2L Turbo Diesel. What is the fuel mileage/economy like. Anything to look out for etc.

We have not done a lot of 4wd so we are looking for some experteeez. We want something that is strong and built to last

Cheers

Correct me if I am wrong but I dont think the factory turbo 100 series came out until late 2000, unless they are an import model or 1hz with an aftermarket turbo fitted.

With the factory turbo vehicle you are bang on! I have a 2001 GVX td 4 speed auto and really you cant go past it for comfort, reliability etc. Fuel consumption is quite good for a 2.5 ton vehicle ranging from 10.6/100 combined to 15-20/100 pending on how fast you tow. There is a common fault with the 4 speed auto torque converter, all up the job cost approx $1300. The rest of the drive line is typical toyota, strong and reliable.

you are right about the turbo its an after market safari turbo if that means anything. its done 250000kms but for a diesel it should still have a lot of kms left in her. How do you tell if the toque converter is on the way out. I couldnt see any hub locks on it, does that mean its full time 4wd or are they auto hubs. I havnt driven one yet thats why im asking about them so i know as much as i can before i seriosly start looking.

They are fulltime 4wd and have a hi lo shift beside the auto shifter

If it has an aftermarket turbo ask if the bottom end has been done as a turbo puts added strain on the motor.

I would look for a later model with the motor I said in it as the 1HZ was slower than a wet week in almost anywhere compared to the later model.

If you can afford it go for a later GXL with the 1HDFTE and the 5 speed auto.

We got 17l per 100km towing 2850kg for over 50,000km

ALWAYS towed in 4th at about 85 -90kph

Service costs are a bit exxy We changed oil etc every 7500km

Never had a puncture on the whole trip and only other cost was a pair of front shockies at 120,000km

Which motor is in the one you are looking at A 1 HZ (Slow as) or the better 1HD

Have a look on the Lcool site for all things Toyota

THe motors ar 1HZ 1HD and 1HD-FTE which is the factory turbo that went until late 2006.

I sold my 2005 recently with 151,000k and $5000 of extras for $50,000.

Made them till 07, my mate has one of the very last of them, fantastic vehicle and he wont upgrade to a 200 series even though he has the $$$ to do it. he said his 100 series is the best 4wd he has ever owned (and he's had a few). Link to the redbook page

Hi,
We have a manual 2002 GXL with the 1HZ engine with an aftermarket turbo with 180000 klms on it that we have owned since 2004. We tow a boat 2000kg at 100klms/hr full of camping gear and an Aussie Swag camper approx 1500kg also at 100klm/hr. While towing we get approx 16-17ltr/100klms, any other time 14ltr/100klms. While the 1HZ is definitely less responsive then the HD engine they are still a strong engine. My advise is if you can find and afford one buy the factory turbo model but if you cant, find a GOOD 1HZ with aftermarket turbo cheap enough and it won't let you down.

We have a 2004 LC100 with the 1HD-FTE and 5 spd auto. It is without doubt the best tow vehicle I have ever owned and may well be my last since I look after it.

If you can I would go for a vehicle with the factory turbo as they perform very well and were built for the turbo. I know that many will report the earlier 1Hz with after market turbo last well but you do hear of failures - most likely due to pushing hard.

We get 11 L/100k when just cruising gently at our sightseeing pace, 13 - 15 when towing our camper trailer, 15 - 19 when pushing hard in sand or hills. I do not flog the vehicle but it does get a nudge when needed.

cheers

factory turbo is better, bottom end of the motor is vastly heavier in comparison to hhz bottom end. aftermarket require a bit of care to be taken when you have that combination. It is a personal preference thing, I have had both previously and have better results and reliability from factory..
