Are you getting 12 volt power to the fridge?, does the indicator light come on when you switch it to 12 volt? I think that model had a light in the actual switch.

Should be able to check element from outside of van through vent grill but would probably have to remove fridge to replace same.

Sounds like the element may have gone, Did you check for voltage at the element? Can you get to the switch at the rear and see if there is power getting to the switch and power going through it when it's turned on, also check what voltage you have on the downstream side of the switch when it is turned on. There is a possibility that not enough volts are getting to the unit. But it must be turned on when you check the voltage as you won't know if there is a high resistance somewhere until you put it under load, if the voltage drops below around 11.5 or 12 volts that may be your problem

The 12 volt system doesn't use a thermostat as far as I know. When you turn it on it's on permanently.
