Roof Top Tent Instalation Suggestions

Hi guys,

I'm looking at purchasing a roof top tent for my 100 series.

The problem I have is that when it's fitted it won't fit into my garage which means that I will have to put it on/off outside.

I will have to do this essentially by myself as the good lady is somewhat vertically challenged and they weigh anything from about 40 kg upwards (the one we are looking at is closer to 60kg).

Has anyone got ideas, tricks, gizmo's etc. on the best method to to this without giving myself another hernia.

Cheers
Craig

Hi Craig, Had the same problem. My garage has a flat roof and I laid a 3.6mm length of 4x4 timber on the roof and put a strap over the far end on the roof. Placed two 25x25 square tubes either side under the tent base and then used two slings with loops diagonally fastened to the ends of the steed 25x25 tubes. I purchase a cheap rope block and tackle on ebay and with one end of the b&t fastened to the end of the protruding 4x4 and the other end to the slings and lifted the tent, then drove my wagon out from under the suspended tent. It is then a simple matter to let the tent down and put it on edge on a trolley and wheel it into the garage. To lift it on to the wagon do the above in reverse.
Cheers

Thanks for your reply, however I'm a bit slow on the uptake and am confused with your explanation.

What is holding up the tent for you to drive under it?
Sureley the block & tackle must be above your car, so what it is suspended from?

The B&T has one end fixed to the end of timber 4x4 that is protruding from the roof of the garage. The other end of the B&T is to the sling attached to the steel tobes that are under the tent. The timber on the roof of the garage is to provide a "sky hook"

ok thanks now it make sense to me. As mentioned I can't get into my garage with it on so obviously I can't get out with it on as well.

I will have to rig up some type of lifting device outside to raise the tent onto the roof of the car.

Craig I bought an engine craine from Super Cheap & extended the boom with some box section that just slips in the existing boom, made a frame that matches the tent with 4 drop down loops that lifts the tent off roof with racks attached, just get the wife to lower it slowly , while I make sure it locates the roof sections on the Prado, hope this makes sense.Friar

Hi Friar,

I need to be able to lift it just over 2 mts to my roof racks. Add on say another 40 or so cm for the depth of the tent and another say 30 cm for the cradle and its attachments that makes the height required to lift would be somewhere in the order of 2.5 mts +-.

I presume that the engine hoist from Super Cheap isn't designed to lift anything that high.

Do you sit it on a platform of some type to give the height required?

Craig

Hello again Craig, when you extend the boom the height increases,I would probably have about 300 more in height , the prado would not be much lower than the cruiser, also I put 20ltrs water on the crain just to be sure it does not up end, been loading it this way for about 3yrs my roof top tent is a Autohomes fiberglass weighing about 60 kgs. Hi Craig,

How much higher is the tent on the LC compared with the garage roof and/or garage door? If it's not much different you could always let some air out of your tyres to get the vehicle inside the doorway and use the available clearance under the garage ceiling for storage of the roof tent. I do this for my roof rack. You could then use the block & tackle to raise and lower the tent onto/off the LC and onto the floor if you want.

Hi Rob,

Unfortunately this solution won't work. Difference between the top of the tent and the top of the garage door will be a little under 30cm.
But thanks anyway.

At this stage I might have to look at making up some type upright post concreted into the ground with a swing style arm and a pulley system.

The hoist from Super Cheap seems to be a simple and probably cost effect solution if I can only work out how to get it to lift to the required hight.

Hi Craig, I have a ARB rooftop tent . It rides on a lifted navara so I would have a very similar roof height as a 100 series cruiser. I too have to install the said tent on my own as the contol tower, A.K.A the wife says thats my domain and she aint interested in the installation !
With this in mind I have had to develop my own system.
I use 2 ramps I have to get my ride on mower onto a trailer and rest them against the roof racks . I then position the tent against the ramps and slide the tent up and then onto the roof. Because the tent isnt too heavy I can move the tent around into the position I want it in.
Has worked on may occasions thus far without breaking my back , moreover it was a very economic solution !
Hope that helps
Cheers
Doughboy !
