Hi all...i live in the dusty Top End and am thinking of getting a
snorkel pre cleaner for my 09 Pathfinder as i do a fair bit of driving on the red stuff...
What do people who already use them think of them ??? do they work (am hoping they reduce the replacement time of the air filter) and do they impair the engine breathing at all ???
Looking fwd to your thoughts......

If you Google "
snorkel pre cleaner" you will get loads of info including several threads from this
forum.
I don't have a pre-cleaner but I did fit some metal gauze into the intake of my
snorkel after reading someones account of having their paper filter element burn up after driving through wind-borne cinders from a bush fire. As the air filter disintegrated pieces of it were drawn into the engine!
I find a good blow-out with the compressor sufficient and I would not want the hassle of detergent-washing a foam filter whilst out bush.

Hi. I use one on my patrol and very happy wiyh it. They dont work as
well at higher speeds over about 80ks. Worth while spending the dollars. They do not impede the air flow at all.
Cheers Col

Hi Col,
Aren't your observations contradictory? You state:
"They dont work as
well at higher speeds over about 80ks."
and
"They do not impede the air flow at all."
If they don't impede air flow then why don't they work
well over 80km/h? What about them doesn't work at higher speeds?

Hi Ben, its not about the impeding the air flow but motion within the bowl that picks up the collected dust once getting into higher speeds. Once of the gravel roads i always swap the pre cleaner for my ram style head. On the gravel roads i dont have a need for high speed so the pre cleaner works great to help slow down the amount of dust into the system. I have used them in conjuction with an oiled filter for many years and have seen how they work.

G'day Dawg,
I have an old FJ45 with the 2F petrol.
Last year i experimented with the typical ram head v's pre cleaner and found the pre cleaner to work extremely
well, such that ive never gone back to the typical ram head.
I found the small pre cleaner on my
snorkel had no effect on economy, and basically doubled the time between filter changes / or ie. when traveling in the outback, stayed much, much, much cleaner each day.
In researching i came to the conclusion that on many / all modern vehicles, the air intake varies so much that there is no pre cleaner on the market that will be efficient across the rev / speed range.
So a smaller pre cleaner might work perfectly up to ie. 60km/h, but it cannot supply enough air for higher speeds. And the larger pre cleaner might work perfectly around 110km/h but at lower speeds does not generate enough 'spin' to actually 'work'.
My advise would be to guesstimate the speed which you will be traveling at when in the 'red stuff' and purchase a pre cleaner / sized to suit that speed. Then fit the pre cleaner as needed, and remove at all other times.
Again, fortunately for me my old girl has such a small rev range and a top speed around 85km/h so the pre cleaner works perfectly all the time for me.
Travis.

Hi mate try this site www.sy-klone.com, they are OEM for all CAT heavy machinery.
Had one on my Patrol, still on my same air filter after 30000 plus Ks of dirt roads across the whole top. where as i used to have to clean it every day and replace at 5000 to 10000 of dirt roads depending on how many roadtrains and other 4x4s are kicking up the dust.
