Hey who has a 200 series turbo diesel what do you think of it offroad/beach and also towing. Im thinking of buying one to tow my boat and also the occasional beach run but no rock climbing or full on 4wd ing , so any info likes dislikes would be helpful. Can you get long range tanks for the vx ir sahara or is it not worth getting the top of the range models and just going for the gxl? Cheers

Umm... is this a Dorothy Dicks question? On the assumption its genuine, towing with some 650Nm of torque and ~3T of weight to stop the tail wagging the dog makes the 200 about the best tow vehicle bar none - I am barring the F150, thats a truck!. As for offroad on the beach, did I mention that 650Nm of torque :)

The VX and Sahara can be optioned as a 7 seater with the factory dual tanks, or an 8 seater with single tank. As for a GXL vs Sahara, depends on what you think is worth it? If leather, sunroof and other gizmos are your thing, then yes. But if you strip out the back seats, put in cargo barriers, steel side steps, snorkels, etc... then I think you may have a different priority and find the $$$ saved better spent on the previously mentioned extras.

As for dislikes, after having an 80 and a GU, about the only thing is the purchase price! But then again I am biased :)

Cheers

I agree with Captain. And if you need to ask, are you really ready for a 200? We have taken our 200 on all forms of terrain, including beach.

Performs perfectly on the beach. The only time we have had a problem in sand was recently at James Price Point, Dampier Peninsular, WA. My fault, I drove into some sand dunes while towing our camper trailer and all of a sudden the sand got very soft and deep and we got stuck. I just let the tyre pressures down on our 200 and trailer and drove out. Any dislikes about our 200? Absolutely no dislikes. We did get a lift done as we wanted to take our 200 anywhere and found it a bit low. The lift made a big difference and we have taken it everywhere!

Before lift.........

After lift....

Hey mate does your cruiser have kdss? Did putting the bullbar on it make the kdss drop to one side. Also same for lift kit if u do have kdss. As someone with a 200 series would you think kdss is better option or just something like old man emu without kdss?

I have the KDSS on my 200 and reckon its worth every cent, and then some. It works both on and off road so even if you never went offroad, there is still a huge benefit. I have also added the OME suspension and it works in well with the KDSS. If I had to choose, I would get the KDSS rather the OME suspension, but tboth is better :)

The 200 drops about 10mm with an ARB bar, but it drops evenly. If you do have a lean on the vehicle, the KDSS is easily reset (if thats the cause) by simply loosening the isolation screw between the front and back cyclinders to even the pressure, but make sure you are on level ground at the time.

Cheers

To Bradlez
We do have KDSS. The fitting of a bull bar did not affect the vehicle, no drop. The OME lift was completed by ARB, Broome and initially there was a lean and the steering was shocking. Found out they had failed to do a front wheel alignment! After a bit of a discussion with them they fixed it all. No lean and the ride is perfect. KDSS works a treat and as long as the system is adjusted correctly when the lift is fitted, it will continue to perform perfectly. Kevin

Brad,

Dude! for stuff like this you really have to go to the LCOOL forum, which, if you don't already know is the place to find out anything and everything about any model Toyota ever sold in Australia and Globally.

You have to become a member, however it's FREE , repeat FREE and I am dead set sure this is where you will find the answer/s to your questions.

This the link for LCOOL:

DD

PS

There are a zillion pages on the ins and outs of the 200 series which will make very pleasant reading for you over the weekend

Except all models pre the 80 series hehehe

Dave B is still sulking about no 60 Series section ;)

OH WHAT A FEELING..! I don't see the need to go to the Lcool forums on this, we have plenty of 200 series owners here and the question was simple.

While ExOz is a great general forum, when you want more detail on specific topics then there are often far better sites around so it only makes sense to suggest links to these recources particually seeing there has only been 2 replies with any substance. Hop onto LCOOL and you'll find a complete section dedicated to the 200 series covering hundreds of theads with opinions covering the good & bad together with tech advice spefic to the models you are looking at.
It's not a matter of not liking the topic rather pointing people in the right direction to find the answer to their question.

HI Bradlez,

The mighty 200 series TTD will do all you require and a lot more.
The traction control and crawl control will take you to places you never dreamed of - (some say these 2 devices together with torsion centre diff lock are almost as good as a 100 series with front and rear lockers).
Have a look at this link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPkuAicIvB8&feature=related

If you get a GXL it is worth adding the option of KDSS (standard on higher models). This suspension is unbelievable - stability when cornering as well as greater articulation.
The 6 speed transmission with torque converter is worls class and provides for economical motoring if just crusing on the highway - 100kph is just 1500rpm. We averages 10.1 litres per 100km on an 1800km round trip interstate - not bad for a V8 !
If you buy new - pay particular attention to how you run it in - its a big engine and needs to be worked hard (but you do this out of love) at various KM while running in - including some towing after the 1000km point. In my own experience (and this is just my opinion) the running in is critical and will minimise oil usage). I have never had a problem with oil consumption on mine - but some owners have.
My view is that history will show one day that this is the greatest Landcruiser ever bulit. If you need more power than its already got you can put in a chip to take it up to an awesome 900mn torque (this will allow you to tow a 3.5tonne van up the Toowoomba range while PASSING other traffic).
Cheers

I love Toyotas, own a 120 Series Prado and would like to move up to a Landcruiser one day.

I'm always keen to follow discussions on the 200 Series Landcruiser and hear both the positives and negatives. On the negative side, be sure to read over this website highlighting some issues -

Hope this helps.
