Aftermarket rear bar swing arm bearing question

Hi All,

Got an aftermarket rear bar on a 1999 model DX GU Patrol that is stiff to move.

I have no idea what brand it is.

I tried to take it apart to get to the bearings to grease them.

I got as far as the top bearing which looks buggered to me 'cause it had stuff all grease mixed with red dirt.

I tried to get to the bottom bearing but have no idea how to get the swing arm off the rear bar to access the bottom bearing. I tried to hit it upwards with a hammer, pry it with a screwdriver and pinchbar but no joy.

Can anyone offer any advice on how I can get the swing arm off?

I have some basic mechanical skills but this has got me stumped.

First off, fill the area with bearings wth a liberal amount of "mechanic-in-a-can", WD-40 or similar. Then go & have a beer or two, to let it soak.

Unless you get the smaller bearing out at the top first, then you'll need a puller to remove the whole assembly. Those pivot assemblies are just like a trailer hub, and if it s never been greased, then condensation has probably rusted everything in place.

If you can't get a puller, but you have two pinch bars, lever from two sides at once, while someone taps the arm upwards, close to pivot. But I'd be trying to get the upper brg out first.

You could also put some pressure on the arm with a high lift jack, if you have one, but watch the panel work.

Thanks for your advice.

Got it in the end.... needed a sledgehammer and piece of jarrah to 'help' it along.

What surprised me was the sze of the bearings. The top bearing and bottom bearing were both thin roller bearings. I reckon as long as I regularly keep grease to it I could go without the bearings. But having said this I will get some replacements and pile the grease in/on and around. Then take it apart and regrease every 2nd oil change.
