Can anyone give me an idea of how long the drive takes from
Lawn Hill to Alice via the Sandover highway? We will be time-constrained, so need help with planning. Or is it faster to go via Mt ISA and
Boulia from
Lawn Hill?
We are travelling from
Cairns to Alice and would really like to include
Lawn Hill if possible, but we only have 8 days! So much to see!

Berylvt,
We did Alice to
Camooweal 2 weeks ago. Left Alice about mid-arvo on Thursday, camped overnight along the Sandover, and were in
Camooweal about 4 pm the next day. About 8-9 hours travel. Sandover is pretty good, except for a few corrugations near Alparra community. This included a lunch stop, as
well as a late start(8.30am) the 2nd day. Also had a number of stops for photos, as there's quite a few
wildflowers along there.
If you want a quick trip, then the Barkly-Stuart highways would be a best bet. Think it's only 200 km further than down the Sandover. Sorry can't remember how long from
Lawn Hill to
Camooweal, but think it would be about 4 hrs, depending on road conditions.
To travel down to
Boulia, then across the Plenty would eat too much time, I'd suggest, as the Donohue section is a bit slow in sections.
Bob.

My experience was the same as Bob's but we drove from the Alice to Cammoweal then on to
Lawn Hill.
I think it's probably possible to make the total journey - Alice to
Lawn Hill - in 2 full days but three is much more realisitic and safe.
We found the Sandover a very good surface until we passed Amaroo Station (I think) then it turns into very flat open cattle country. We drove through some time after rain and the cattle trucks had really made a mess of the road surface when it was wet - it was not much more than a hugely divetted track. So weather can obviously change your experience radically
Happy Days
