Cn be veryconfusing. I do believe that the NT Govt has a site (google it) that may be of help. The last thing you want to do is get caught. Most areas in NT you need a permit to buy grog.

The phrasing may vary but in general consumption of alcohol is prohibited in Aboriginal Lands but it is permitted to carry small amounts for personal consumption whilst travelling through Aboriginal Lands. In any case, it is wise to keep it well hidden in your rig and to not imbibe publicly.

The same with photography. Never even carry a camera in an aboriginal community and never aim a camera at an aboriginal at any time unless you first request permission.

I live in Arnhem land Al and I know for a fact that you can ONLY carry alcohol in your vehicle if your final destination allows the consumption of alcohol. For example you can carry grog from Karherine to Gove. If you stop overnight and have a drink and the feds or local cops spot you, you can be in all sorts of trouble. We also have to have a permit to buy and consume alcohol.
Once again the bloody minority are ruining it for the majority.
Regardless of where you are travelling, check the state/Territory and local liquor laws out first...ignorance is no excuse and could cost you dearly.
cheers

Drove from Tennant Creek to Alice and passed a few signs saying entering a restricted area, no alcohol or porn and then signs saying leaving the area, a whole heap of very small print which I didn't read, this was on the Stuart Highway, I ignored them and would argue my case if caught............ bloody ridiculous and confusing.

G'day Stevo, The permits can be very confusing, but yes, you'll be fine carrying grog as you traverse the GCR. just don't take it into the communities, and don't consume it until you are past the shire boundary 120km's West of Warburton.
Our roadhouse here is outside of that, and Alcohol is permitted here

My understanding is that if you have say unopened cartons of beer or cask wine in full view anywhere in the vehicle, in a restricred area, you can be deemed to be sly-grogging or trafficiking.
Small amounts of alcohol carried but hidden out of sight in the vehicle for personal consumption is ok.

I travelled the GCR in July and my permit, condition #4, reads "refrain from consuming alchol within reserve unless the appropriate approvals have been obtained".

Fuel costs on the GCR varied between $2.30 at Tjukayirla Roadhouse and Warakurna (Giles) and $2.45 at Warburton. At the Yuluru Shell, there are 2 diesel bowsers, the "truck" one at $1.80 and the one amongst the petrol bowsers at $1.835, make sure you pick the right one!

The roads were closed behind me when I went, they were flooded just past Docker River and I was driving unknowingly on a closed road, there was a 30km section that was more like lake driving! But apart from that, the road was generally in very good condition and ~80km/hr is easily maintained even while towing. Use appropriate tyre pressures and it is fine.

Also, the best food on the GCR is at the Tjukayirla Roadhouse by far, makes sure you have a bite there :)

Cheers

Gday,

In the NT you could (be carefull as the rules change over night) carry small amouts of unopened alcohol through a prescribed area if you can can prove your final destination is outside of the prescribed area. Im not sure what they
call a small amout , but be careful, because you could be labelled a grog runner too.
In saying that.......dont let anyone see it either or you might have even more trouble on your hands!
Im not 100% sure on WA and would be getting it all in writting from the appropriate authorities anyway......you can end up in allsorts of bleep if you get it wrong.

Cheers

I can vouch for the comment on photography.
People I know stopped to take pics of some locals in central aus and left in a hurry with rocks being thrown at them.

We have carried heavy alcohol for our personal use, into all areas.
Prohibited, or light beer areas, and it makes no difference to us.

But one thing we do is not to advertise the fact that we are having alcoholic drinks.
Discression is the order of the day.

Be smart and enjoy your drink.

Cheers

We must live in a strange society. I believe that the indigenous people were given drinking rights some years ago and now those rights are being eroded away. It would appear that all men are equal but some are more equal than others what with permits and the like and drinking laws.
What also a noise me is the way the media shove cameras in peoples faces and then get annoyed if their cameras get pushed out of the way or smashed. I would also like to make the paperartsy illeagal
