G'day all

I have't bought a Prodigy for about 8 years. So have things changed much and is the P2 a superseded model or are they both current models and do a different job?

I will be towing a small van behind the new Dmax.

Hi BooBoo
I put in a tekonsha primus IQ into my new Dmax a few months back. Very easy install.
The IQ has exactly the same internals, same features and works in exactly the same way as the P3, just has less of the flashy display. Works very well.
I tow a Jayco Hawk OB camper (1.3t laden) and it has been faultless

Cheers

Thanks Mark

I presume there are wiring instructions, and did you wire it from the harness at the back of the Dmax?

Sorry, almost forgot to say my Dmax is a single cab/chassis.

Yep came with instructions.
Ran blue trailer brake wire along chassis to harness at the back (trailer plug)
Ran brake wire to the red wire at the break pedal plug under the dash (this is the wire that activates the brakelight). (I googled the correct wire to hook into here).
Ran pwr & earth direct to battery (pwr via 50A circuit breaker) thru the rubber grommet RHS firewall behind o'flow bottle

The last wire you should connect is the +ve to the battery.

The controller is fitted to the left of the steering column at about a 45deg angle. I have the d-cab LS-M D-max.

I ordered mine of ebay with all wiring, connectors etc complete.

Cheers
Mark

Mark thanks for the info.

I have since found a lot of info on the P2 & P3 and not that much on the Primus.

The video's on utube are also very helpful.

I have also looked at ebay and the prices seem quite reasonable for the P3, $153.

Derek from ABR also has the additional wiring for it at $29.95, plus $13.95 postage.
Although I can probably get the wiring from an electrician and I would find all the connectors in my tool box.

At this stage I will probably go with the P3, but might go for a wander down the street and think about it.

Good point about the +ve being the last to connect. LOL

The three of them look good, but I have decided on the P3.

One of the key points of difference with Tekonsha and the Prodigy range particularly is there ability to self level as well as provide progressive braking to the trailer. This is very useful in hilly country on bitumen and vital if you intend to tow off road and by that we mean the Simpson Desert or similiar. These capabilities allow the brake controller to progressively apply braking to the trailer whereas others apply the maximum as soon as you hit the brake pedal which is not always the best solution

As we operate off-road continually towing an Ultimate XTrak we will only ever use Tekonsha, unless something better comes along. The new version of the Prodigy is excellent and in some ways easier to setup and use than the prodigy

Bottom line is it all depends on what you want. If you are towing off-road then Prodigy or similiar and if regularly in hilly terrain same applies in our view

If on flat land mostly then almost anything

Regards

Rob

You're on a roll.

We travel a lot of country roads with the wifes work and we can't avoid hilly and sometimes dirt roads.

The P3 gets ordered on Monday.
