Hi,
This discussion is addressed to those who have done more than 500000 kms in their Land Cruisers and still being the first owner.
Soon I will be getting my brand new Land Cruiser with the 1HZ engine. It should last at least 500000 kms. I have four questions:
1. How did you break in your engine from day 1 (if you still remember)? Did you drive it hard, soft, high load, low load?
2. How often do you do oil changes?
3. What type of oil do you use? It is my impression that Australians still go by mineral oil with frequent changes and Europeans with fully synthetic with longer intervals.
4. How often do you do filter changes?

Lucas,
My 1995 1Hz troopy has done just on 400,000 so it is a youngster.
1. - I did not buy it new but I know that it was worked hard on a
farm which would have involved quite a bit of short haul stop start stuff.
2. I change oil every 5,000 as did the original owner
3. I use Penrite Diesel which is a non-synthetic. There is a synthetic version which is use in my 100 series. I would assume that your new engine would have the appropriate material used for the seals etc so that you can use synthetic without a problem. It causes major issues in older vehicles causing seals to harden and fail. The handbook will advise.
4. I change the filter with every oil change. I use genuine ones which cost about $30 ea.
5. My fuel consumption is on trips varies from 9 to 13 L/100k depending on conditions, but typically I get around 11. I do not tow with this vehicle - for that I use the 100 series with the factory turbo.
Oil consumption is about 1/2L between changes with up to 1L if the weather is very hot and I am working it hard. This has not changed over the last 200K and I don't worry as it does not blow noticeable smoke.
The cylinder compressions were tested about 100K ago and all were ok. I am happy this engine will keep going for a long time yet.
cheers
