HI OZ DOC - SHELLITE IS THE SAME STUFF. BUNNINGS STOCK SHELLITE IN 5LT AND 1LT BOTTLES. ABOUT $27.00 FOR 5LT. SOME
HOME HARDWARE, MITRE 10 AND COUNTRY
IGA SUPERMARKETS ALSO CARRY IT.
WHITE SPIRIT IS NOT THE SAME THING AND WILL NOT WORK IN COLEMAN FUEL APPLIANCES.
IF YOU ARE USING A QUANTITY, YOUR LOCAL
SHELL DEALER CAN GET IT IN 20LT DRUMS. GOOD LUCK.

Thanks guys but I am led to believe Shellite is not the same stuff. Apparently Coleman Fuel has additives in which help prevent things gumming up. When we initially bought the lamp many years ago we ran it on Shellite and pretty soon had a problem with the regulator. Had it serviced at a camping store in Cannington and the chap there advised stick to the Coleman Fuel. Have done so ever since without any problems. Coleman no longer make parts for this fuel light so want to keep it going as long as possible. Went into army surplus store today and they said haven't been able to get the coleman fuel lately so was wondering did anyone know who has supplies. Thanks for your replies. doc.

Coleman are in the process of repackaging thier fuel and it will soon be available. People don't normally have trouble with shellite. Having problems with it shortly after buying it could have been from oil in the generator form manufacturing. I assume this is what you mean by regulator. New lamps need a good initilal burn to make sure anything that is in there from new is burnt out. Or it could have just been one of those thing's i have seen shelite go off and not burn but no gum up. How old is your lamp most generators for coleman lamps are available.
Good luck
Derek

HI and thanks derraux, our lamp is approximately 10 years old. We used it for about 2 years before having trouble with the generator. I did a search on the coleman website for a new generator and rubber seal- no longer available. I have pulled the pump mechanism apart and given it a clean and lube. Hoping with some coleman fuel it will go for a bit longer but if not I guess we have had a good run out of it.Thanks, doc.

Thanks Derek it is 282-700T- the single mantle model. I would love to have a new generator and a new pump cup if you have one. The pump mechanism seemed to come apart last time I used it. Took it apart and looks like it had just unscrewed from the base for some reason. Anyway, the pump cup was a bit tired but came good with a clean and a drop of oil. The pump mechanism is working again but a bit noisy and not too smooth. The lamp is tending to surge and flare up a bit but only has a drop of fuel in it at the moment. I was hoping to buy some coleman fuel and give it a good run before deciding if it is salvagable or not. If I could replace the pump cup and generatory I think it will be fine. Ta, doc.

Hi Tenpounder- went into every one of these outlets today and no one had any coleman fuel. Army surplus said they ordered it but wasn't supplied. I'm wondering if Coleman are discontinuing it or have production problem. doc.

I have been using a product made by GSB performance chemicals for a few years.
The chemical name is K55 and otherwise known as 'shellite'
I buy it in an industrial estate outlet at Labrador
Gold Coast in a 20lt drum which lasts me about 2.5 years.
The last drum worked out at about $4.50 per litre.
It may pay to email GSB and find an outlet.

Caltex make a product that we have used exclusively for 15yrs, have never replaced a generator in two stoves and a light.
It is called Solvent 143. About $80.00 for a 20lt drum.

We use 143 in our stove and 282lantern with no issues. Like the price too.

Thanks to all whom replied. Sounds like the Coleman fuel stocks will be available again soon, and in the meantime shellite is just as good(despite my earlier beliefs). Derek has kindly offered to supply me with a new generator and pump assembly which should sort things out nicely. Thanks again folks, doc.

I worked for COLEMAN for ten years when the first set up in Aus (1978) and COLEMAN FUEL as you know it now was not available as we could not import it. We sent samples of SHELLITE to the USA and it is compatible with their fuel and has no build up in the generators of either lanterns or stoves. BP also had a similar product they packaged in 5 lt cans but due to low demand took it off the market. Hope this clears up any misunderstandings. Shellite is fine. Cheers, Mike
