Plenty of people camp at Fosters, although you wouldn't want to tow anything in there. It's not a kid's swimming beach though.... you would have to be dilligent if kids were in the water there.

Hi Joe and mel,

Its not exactly on a beach however on the road in to Bremer bay theres a right hand turn to Millers Point and a drive of around 10 kms? where there is a campground with pit toilet, no other facilities from memory. A caretaker dropped by once a week for fees I think around $5 per night.
You can camp on the water there and there's great bream fishing, or was a couple of years ago when we stayed a week or so.

Not sure whether this is helpful to you but thought I would mention it.

Regards,

Heather

Mother, mother, mother,...I know you are the font of all knowledge and you have given me many helpful tips (under different pseudonyms) but this is my back yard and I have been there many times over the years, and again just recently, and am going again in November (Tailor, Herring and all sorts). I don't want to publicise the area so keep 'mum' about the beauty of the place!

Hi again MH,
I just found out from my friendly fisheries inspector that all the Herring we caught were actually 'Salmon Trout' a VERY big no no in that area.
The way the unwashed can tell the difference is to run your finger along the side of the fish both ways. If the skin is rough both ways, then it's a Herring (Tommy Rough). If the skin is smooth one way and rough the other, then it's a "Salmon Trout'
A trap for the unwary

interesting little thread above, i am now recalling memorys of that, the "Salmon Trout" have spots on the belly and not a great deal more to seperate them ..... have not heard of the "skin" thing but good to remember ..... Hammersly Beach is a fav for all that but wont tell secrets eh hahaha
Millars point is off my list ..... for the record my dad used to do the mail run from Gnp to Bremer back when it was a sand track ... oh those were the days eh .....
Dingo ..... you MUST try to do a trip to Hammersly in June some time, just on dusk you will get Tailor of around 10K plus and awsome salmon, skippy, herring and yes "salmon trout" ....... just an awsome spot ....
Maybe i should just go there eh hahaha
Cheers

Salmon trout don't have the yellow eyes of a herring.

once you know what your looking at its easy to pick a salmontrout from a herring but no question most people would need to be shown

theres a few clues - black tips to the tail and different eyes

Im in 2 minds about WAs regs on salmon fishing with a minimum size of 300mm and a bag limit of 4

part of me says it makes no sense as these are a very common fish and if every recreational angler tried they could not catch what 1 pro rapes out of the sea in 2 hours work netting entire schools

but yet the financial return for the meagre salmon caught by rec fishers far outweighs what the pros get selling them for cray bait

you can still get lucky down south in season but as tonnes of schools are removed every year by net the time between a decent catch starts making you wonder if its worth it

on the other hand

"back in the day" people wouldnt throw ANY fish back and it was common to have piles of rotting fish dumped behind the dunes

because lets face it salmon are definitly a "neighbours" fish

is it really 300mm for the size limit ?????
In years past if we caught a salmon of 300mm we would very quickly put it back as that is soooooo small it was something we never let ya mates see, no way catchin tadpoles hahahaha.
They are still there and still very big fish and i may add still very nice to eat, if anybody does not like eating them then please dont catch them, we love them to eat, just one only and it will feed 5 people, the others are very strictly catch n release as you can NOT freeze salmon fillets ................

If you want to cross the estuary, then you have numerous great beaches to camp at, right down to Doubtfull Islands.. In quite a few places there are Salmon fishermens shacks that can be legally used for camping.
Depends on type of camping and vehicle you have but if interested, give me a further call.

I don't know which shacks you can legally use for camping. The one I am thinking of down that way you certainly cannot use for camping.... while the lease is valid they are usually private property.

The Salmon fishermens shacks are available to the public when not being used by the Salmon fishermen. This was a condition that the Salmon fishermen agreed to. There are other shacks in the area that are privately owned as well.

It must vary from beach to beach Dingo. Without going into specifics there is at least one shack down Bremer that is not privately owned (it is a condition of the salmon fishing license) but is certainly not open to public use. Seems it would be important for anyone thinking about using the shacks to make sure before they camp.
