Mr Spend It
Hi,
Anyone help with problem I have with front wheel alignment on my cruiser.
The SAHARA model has a
suspension that continual adjusts hydraulically (Via Shockers) to give level ride, plus a low setting and high clearance setting that only allows selected setting to be held for short periods and nothing over 40 K/Hr or it reverts back to normal setting.
Vehicle only used for on-road and caravan towing no serious bush bashing to mess up alignment.
I don't drive or corner hard to cause abnormal wear.
I've had over past 3 years 7 wheel alignments including from fitting new set of tires.
Either outside or inside edge of tires wears.
I've run tire pressures from low pressures of 28~45PSI and everything in between, including factory recommended settings.
Suspension (Springs/shockers) is as per original no change.
In Melbourne/Geelong area can anyone recommend someone who can fix this problem once and for all.
Col

The wear your describing inside is too mutch toe out, outside too mutch toe in. You may have to have a wheel alignment with the vehicle loaded & with driver & pasenger ithe vehicle. I have done wheel alignments on vehicles that the toe in/out varies quite considerably betwean loaded & unloaded vehicle. Very easily verified with the alignment gear on the vehicle, & bounce the front up & down & watch the toe in/out vary. Ford couriers were notorious for this.

Hi
Thanks for response.
Yep it's my thoughts as
well but once set it should maintain setting unless heavily knocked to put it out.
Vehicles should run with some toe in probably around 0.5~1 degree for tracking, is that your understanding.
On my car it's only the drivers side affected.
I'm heavy so next time I'll stay in car during alignment, not something I've needed to do on any of my previous cars.

gidday Spend-it
mine was the same, til I got Steve at Bridgestone in
Geraldton WA to do it.
Had the car 5 years and the first 3 years it chewed the front tyres, partly becuase we have a few roundabouts near our house maybe.
But many guys will fill you full of BS that "nothing can be done", "its a heavy car", "aus roads have too much camber" and other associated rubbish.
Steve did
mine and while I still rotate the tyres, I did about 10000ks while measuring tread depth and there was less than 1 mm diff across front tyres, a little over to the back tyres.
Not much help though as we are a long way from you unfortunately.
But it can be done.

Hi,
Thanks.
Might be an excuse to take a trip but would probably require a new set of tires once I arrived before wheel alignment was undertaken.
I'll try and locate Bridgestone
Geraldton on web and maybe he might be prepared to give advise on settings or changes that I need to have carried out to solve issue.

Hi
Looked on web but there maybe more than one store.
Would you remember address or phone number/e-mail I could call or send mail.
What tires do you have on vehicle now?
I'm tossing up for my next set between Coopers or Mickey Thompson or remain with
Dunlop.

Hi Col,
You've already received some good advice. If you want to discuss with someone who I describe as extremely knowledgeable in all things Landcruiser (including
suspension on 100 series), perhaps give Darren McCrae at Autocraft in Sth. Geelong a call, on 03-5221-1371.
Or better yet, go round and see him. Website is www.auto-craft.com.au
Cheers, MArk.

I had a 100 GXL and it cut out the edges of the front tyres
The reason was the small roundabouts where I lived. Chopped out a set of Yokos in 30,000k
Put a set of BFG AT's when we left on the trip around
the block and only back and fronted them twice in 50,000k and they still had 4mm on them.
Driving styles I was usually late for work and so was a bit enthusiastic I guess.
Friend has same trouble in a VW Golf.
As I had to hang on when he went around roundabouts its not hard to see why he does.
He thinks its tha cars fault LOL

Hi,
I try to drive careful around roundabouts as they are a real killer on tires no matter type of car.
I just returned from a 10 day towing trip mostly flat straight roads up on the Murray and tires still showed same pattern.
I believe there is some basic issue I have with set-up, I'll keep trying to get it solved.

Problem is once they get a wear pattern on them it wont stop.
So even doing what you have done wont stop it.
Get it set up correctly and put new tyres on the front.
Have you had it from new or not.
Maybe its been in a front end prang and the chassis is out

the "tyres wearing cos of roundabouts" thing, I dont subscribe to Im afraid.
Of course there is a little wear on them but its all relative. Small cars with small tyres big cars with big tyres.
And if roundabouts were that much of a killer, the road would be black as the ace of spades on every roundabout from rubber chewed off, noticably in the area of wheels running.
Most wheel alignment guys seem to just read the book and let the machine tell them what to do. It seems very few make a judgement or even are able to.
Many not being mechanics have little or no understanding of what they are adjusting I reckon.
