Childbride & I drove to
Newcastle & back & stayed O/nite last nite. As we are
thinking of buying a caravan, we look closely at them while travelling.
Probably 90% are towed by 4wd. The ones towed by cars all looked level & rode
well.
About a third of the 4wd vans were tail heavy & some weaved about, particularly
when overtaking. A similar proportion were the opposite..front down, though this didnt
appear to hinder handling. The balance, looked level, & were generally older tugs
driven by folks that looked like experienced caravanners. The biggest surprise was an
Xtrail towing a dual axle van that looked about 20' long, very slowly I do add, must
have been close to illegal, not sure. It appears getting the show level may not be
that easy, or dont folk bother too much ?. All interesting stuff. You wont be that
interested to learn my old Peugeot 405 went up & back on 52 Litres of juice at 14.6
Km per Litre (or 6.8L/100km) sitting on the speed limit, but I'm laughin my
T*** off...:)))))........oldbaz.

Now now Oldbaz one should not crow on a
forum where most people have gas guzzlers. LOL
Mate you have probably have opened a can of worms here.
Far too many people that tow anything, but especially caravans have got know idea how dangerous the setup is when it is not level, the ball weight is not right and the weight distribution is wrong. Not to mention what weight distribution bars are required on what rig. Etc,etc.etc,.
If you do get a van get some training on how to tow and set it up properly.
Send us a photo of the 405 with a van on the back. LOL

I like your 405 Baz
Where have we gone wrong ? - I think every car I have had has got worse fuel consumption than the one before it.
I think my first , a VW beetle was around 40mpg (7lt/100km) down to the new auto Patrols 17mpg.
Who said the good old days , weren't so good!

I thought I might excite you with that. Stay calm when I tell you its a 2L petrol auto,
found for $5k with 65k on it. Shows what a miserable old fart I am, I know, but show
me cheaper motoring. Besides, I must do my bit to help you stir these poor diesel besotted sods..:)))))) cheers....oldbaz.

Well ya didn't call in for a cuppa and a good'day, did ya ? :-(
Driving a coach around, I can't help but notice the number of newish caravans that are "Crabbing" down the highway behind their tugs.

G,Day oldbaz. Arrived at
Silverton Sat night. The last 700k into a strong headwind.Towing a full Sterling Outback with a 4ltr Prado. I used 220l which I think works out to about 8.5 mpg. Bit of a shock but what can ya do. Cheers,Bob

G'day Bob, pleased you got there ok. That sort of wind will stuff fuel consumption.
I'm sure the pleasure of the gathering will soften the pain.cheers....oldbaz.
