Arrrghhh. Bet you got the "I told you so" from the missus.
You'll hear about that for a few years to come. :)

Fab.

If you left the nagging woman who wasn't given you any encouragement at the bottom, you might have made it......

Ooooooohhh, so close but so far

Did you end up making it at second or third attempt?

You may need to start your run up at Eyre creek LOL

Only had the one go. Too hard to reverse the trailer down the hill. My mate snatched me over the top.

And yes if I had left my wife and 140KG son at the bottom I recon I could have gotten airborne over the top LOL. I had left them out on a couple of the other difficult dunes along the way. But this was too far fro them to walk. Arn't I kind and thoughtful.

140kg Son?

That wasnt him being told to shut up was it?

Does he have a disorder or something, cause he must be painfully overweight?

Hi Wayne, sorry mate that came out wrong.

Less runup, less speed, less air. Your missus would have been eating her words & you'd be the one saying I told you so. Ahhhhhhh............. that was so close :-))

Dont know about the less speed but I think I should have selected 2nd gear earlier.
As for tyre pressures I dare not let then down any more for fear of popping off the rim. 12psi Front 18 Rear.

Anyway I had a good go at it.

I was too busy to look at the speedo. I would estimate 110kph But I lost some speed through the left and right kink at the bottom of the hill.

"12psi in the front" is soft for that 110kph you say. I was doing nothing like that with 14psi all around.

Although throwing a car at a dune can give the required result at times, on Big Red I'm more a fan of halving that speed & ensuring peak power in the appropiate gear for the final 20 metres. Reducing speed allows confidence to drop pressures without risking the tyres rolling off & avoids washing off valuable speed on the last corner before the top. Of course every day the sand conditions change so each vehicle needs to approach it differently but years ago I learnt from a few very experienced desert dwellers that it's possible to drive over from a standing start from the bottom with no runup at all.
In any case towing a camper trailer to within a car length of the top is a great effort.
Cheers Craig............

There was very little weight on the front of the vehicle that is why I was able to get away with very low pressure. Most of the time on the Simpson trip I was running 16 front and 25 rear.

On normal gravel I run 28 Front and 35 Rear. That is when towing the trailer.

Yes you are correct I possibly did not need all that run up. As I said before I was too late in selecting 2nd gear and I think this was my undoing.

Cheers
