Does anyone know if the cub camper trailer is a good one? we are looking for an off road camper trailer(hard floor) and have looked at the Kimberley, but do not really like the set up as much as the cub. Looked at the Ultimate with an ultimate price! Even down to looking at a Jayco dove, we have a lifted Subaru Forester which we have crossed the Simpson five times in. No problems. We do not want to tow a trailer across the desert, but would like one for camping off road around the place. We do go through some deepish creeks to get where we go off road, but have no problems. We want something light, as the Subaru is not really set up to tow big weights. We do not want anything too heavy anyway, regardless of what car we would be driving. Do not want to upsize at this stage, as we are now retired and do not want bigger, just something nice and easy to tow. I was told that Cub were rubbish by someone, so just want to know. they said they were held together by staples and ply!!!
Jimboomba campers do a good trailer but they are soft floors and I think soft floors take too long to set up for one nighters. Also not so good in wet muddy areas if it is boggy etc.

WE have a cub daintree LE off road and I can tell you there are no staples in it. The ply timber in it is attached to the steel frame with tech screws. We are happy with it once we got the knack of setting the roof up. I have had the thing apart doing some mods and extra lights and have found it to be weel constructed.

Thanks for the info, it gives us some idea of what to look for. We have looked at the Ultimate, but a bit exy. The cub seems to have a nice light weight one and quite a lot of choices.

We've been towing a Cub hardfloor camper all over Oz since 1979, the fiorst one was replaced with a Supamatic in 1988 due to a larger family (kids!) and is still going strong. Yes you may need to do a few mods/repairs as you may do with just about anything but they are pretty tough.

We just needed to know they are tough enough. Sounds like you have proved it, so will definitely look at them soon. Not sure about second hand or new. Depends on the cost.

I have looked into these, but much the same as Kimberley and the weight is just a little more than we would like to tow. I know the Forester can tow an Eagle off road Jayco, but people we know have experienced problems with their clutch. they do have a very steep driveway, but I put it down to all the crap they have stored in the camper van, which has added way more weight than the subaru can cope with on a steep hill and they are a bit slack with their servicing of the vehicle.

The Pioneer Argyle 4x4 has a tare weight of only 660kg, I can't think of any true offroad campers that would weigh less.

something else to consider. There are so many to choose from, it makes it hard.

hi julie, I have a cub camperoo that was probably desined for on road use. I reinforced the chassis underneath, fitted shockers and light truck tyres, fitted solid axle. I have towed this cub to innaminka 4 times, birdsville, googs track, border track etc. Not a thing has bent, broken or fallen to bits inside. When you stop its less that 5 minutes before its set up and your haven a coldy. Still only weighs 460 kg empty. Good thing. cheers mark

Thanks for all the information I am receiving. It really helps with people knowing so much more than we do, being new to camper trailers etc. we still use tents for our bushwalking pursuits, but just the thought of ordinary camping with the tarp and rain and wind, it would be nice to have something a little more cosy at times.

We were considering a cub and decided to try before buying. We hired one and had so much trouble with it we decided not to buy one! Lots of broken, bent and faulty bits on it. I strongly suggest you try before you buy.

Beryl,

Did you hire this unit from Cub themselves or someone else ?

We hired it from a hire company whose card was given to us by Cub. Nerang, Gold Coast.
We left them a list of the problems with the worker on return but didn't hear from the owners. The hire company obviously didn't care. But we felt the Cub hadn't stood up ro the wear and tear of the hire company very well at all.

Beryl,

Thanks for the reply. Looks like Cub should definitely take more interest in the performance of organizations they refer prospective customers to. The hire company is obviously not interested in repeat business either.
