It is a road, not a track.
Its condition varies with traffic and rain and the grader.

Does that make the Birdsville Track the Birdsville Road?

Gooday Flanno, out there two weeks ago road OK, if travelling south on the Strez, then there is a short cut 12 ks past Bollards Lagoon cattle grid.Cameron Corner Store can advise. Cuts a little bit off and is a good track, only about 37 ks, saves going via Merty Merty. Regards

G'day flanno,
Just got back from a 3 week trip up that way. If you are going on the Merty Merty from Cameron Cnr to the Strezleki track the track conditions aren't to bad except when you get to the western side of the yellow bus, some of the dunes have wide holes full of soft sand and can be a bit of a trap but otherwise its not to bad.

have a safe trip

We drove the section from the corner to the Old Strezleki Track at Merty on the 9th Sep. Piece of cake but watch out for some pot holes on the western side of the dunes. Just take it easy over the crests.

We came back that way about a month ago. Road was in very good condition 100kph conditions. Watch some of the Crests they can be tricky with some unexpected sharp corners.

We were out there a few weeks ago and had to travel under the 40kph in some sections from Merty Merty to the corner. Close to Merty lots of bull dust and corrugations. one crest caused us to be airborne at 40 kph. The pot holes are caused by 4x4 travelling to fast and landing heavily on the other side causes huge potholes that fill up with bull dust. Take care.

yes, can back that ............ do NOT go any faster than 40-60 klmh MAX, and i mean 60 MAX on on the flats only, go back to 40 for every crest ............... as some crests are are very bad and you will come un-stuck, we also hit a hole at probally 50 klmh and nearly bounced off the road .....
on it 2 weeks ago...
Cheers

I suppose that just shown how conditions deteriorate in a very short period of time.

When I traveled it there was no corrugations as it had been graded recently. There was some loose sand as I got closer to Cameron's.

The Crests were dangerous IMOP and need to be treated with caution. I am not surprised to hear there has been accidents.

When I refer to 100KPH I was referring to the smoothness of the road at that time. It dose not mean you can sit on 100KPH up hill and down dale. Drive to the conditions not the speedo.

Yes, cheers Wayne that's what I thought you meant, but I thought that flanno should be warned about the dangers of the place just in case. And you are right the conditions change in a very short time especially if the grader has just gone through. Mike
