hi, I bet nobody has asked that question, yet.
We know those fixed air con units are expensive because they are
specially only for RVs and boats, and also we don't like their weight, if
they are installed on the roof.
Why not use a small mobile unit as they are used in normal houses?
They are cheap and can be taken out, when the caravan/ camper is used over
the cold months.
Does anybody use them for that purpose?

i kinda get your point but some of the fixed units are "multi voltage" inputs and can do 12V and 240V ac/dc so that alone is why some are fixed and some are "mobile" as you say and getting them that take 12v DC and 240v AC are far and apart ......................
My advice is stop reading the books and get out there and do it, you will love it to bits and learn how all this stuf works eh ......

hi mate, thanks
... but u can't run an air con on battery, they draw to much.
I like to figure out if I should install one or not because I
am just getting the van and can get things fitted by the
compliance workshop a bit cheaper.

That's why the question "is it worth paying for a fixed system or do
some use the cheap mobile units, which obviously need more space, too.
But than they can be used in a tent, too.

The mobile units wouldn't blow the head off a cold beer. Their performance is disappointing.

Cheers

And depending on operating mode, how do you get the cold/hot exhaust air outside?

but if they work in rooms, and we deal with quite small rooms.
Last time I used one was in a overheating server IT room,
that thing got it nice cold in there, I just had to take the condensation
water out once a day

If they were so good everyone would have one.

As almost no one has maybe they arent

Also where are you going to put it in the van

Not exactly much spare floor room

184,
Was that the large commercial units which have a footprint of about a metre square? Yes those ones are ok though I don't think you would have one in a van. Be wary of the small domestic ones.

I probably just give it a try and get one from LG or
what ever there is. I thought I could leave it in the roof top box
when it's not needed.
The one my company used was nothing special,
I ll keep that issue here updated

I have THIS ONE in my 17 ft caravan, which is insulated as most vans these days are.

It works a treat. Will provide brass monkey conditions LOL.

Much better and quieter than most roof top units I have had.

It lives alongside the rear island bed, on the port side, and the vent is through the floor via a small hatch which I removed under the wardrobe drawer on that side.

I don't use the heat cycle in the caravan. For that I use a ceramic fan heater.

I looked at plenty before I decided on this one, only after seeing one in action.

Fred.

have you thought about installing a domestic split system. I had one in my last caravan and just installed one in my new caravan. they are cheap, quiet, and efficient. my current one is a mitsubishi inverter.
