Hi all, heading up the Cape next week, just wondering if anyone has just got back and can tell me what the tracks are like, post peak season traffic, did the trip a few years ago same time, was nice and warm and very little traffic but the OTL crossings were a bit worse for wear ,also hows the bypass road corrugation wise, any updated info on camping at the Pennefather river, last time we went without a permit and just paid a local T.O guy that looked after the area,
thanks in advance for any assistance

Just got back.

Laura to Coen is a bit average but not too bad.

Bramwell to the ferry is a mess.

OTL is heavily corrugated in places.

Will be worse by the time you get there going by the numbers heading up a week ago.

The road is the least of your problems though, it's the idiots on it with excessive speed or worse the idiots doing 10k/hr zig zagging to try and avoid the corrugations. Not a lot of fun when you come around a corner and find them across your side of the road! Hopefully they all come home this week.

Last October Pennefather had a ranger living in the house there, not sure if that is still the case.

Have a great time.

Wish I was heading back.

G'Day Edwin,

I'm currently in Cairns, and about to start our Cape trip, I was speaking to a couple of fellas staying in a site near ours who have just returned from a 2 week cape trip, and I got the impression from them that all the roads they did were a walk in the park? They did the OTT on the way up, including all the "difficult" crossings, but took the easy options at Gun Barrel etc, and they said the Development road on the way back was "good" They looked to be fairly experienced off roaders, with lifted Patrols and Muddies and winches etc, and one of them said they did an EFS shock, so I'm thinking they like it pretty rough?

Cheers....Browny
