Anne Beadell Hwy Conditions

Hey Guys,
We are planning to head across the AB from Laverton to Coober pedy in a coupke of weeks and were after some input. I have heard tell that the scrub can get pretty tight in Places. Our camper is a bit wider than the car and while I am not worries about scratches I would like to know how heavy the scrubs will be to get through?
Cheers,
Ben

Hi Ben,

We are heading across the AB in a couple of weeks time too from Coober Pedy to Laverton. My research says all is good except for the usual corrugations. I will be ringing the Ilkurlka Roadhouse a few days before we go for up to date conditions though.

Cheers

Hey Wooly,
We are about to leave Laverton WA heading for Cooberpedy. We will be out of service from Now on. Expect to land at Coober pedy 9th of 11th.
This end has been quite wet so not sure on conditions but track is listed as open at Laverton.
Good luck and hope to see you on the way.
BTW we are running on UHF channel 19.

Cheers,
Ben and Helen Richards

Also travelling with Barb and John Richards.

Hi 4Motion

The above section is out of Laverton on the way out to Yamarna. It is only for a short distance. For more images of what you can expect to see, have a look at my Blog on the Anne Beadell.

It is a great trip, take your time and allow a minimum of 7 days to complete the crossing. Your biggest friend will be low tyre pressures and keep to speed well down.

Have a great trip.

Cheers

I see your mate had a pretty big van with him. Did he have any trouble, aside from broken windows?

Hi

John's van was not an off road type and he did have trouble. As his van was wider than his vehicle, the van cope fairly well but had axel problems from the constant corrugations.

On the other hand, Stewart and his F250 and off road camper went through without any problems what so ever.

Like I said before, keep you tyre pressures down and you will have an enjoyable trip.

Cheers

Hi Guys,

We travelled the Anne Beadell not too long ago to map the track from Coober Pedy to Laverton. Our Map Guide has all the information your may need including Len Beadells bench markers and good camping locations. There are plenty of pictures along the track and we have provided GPS co-ordinates throughout.

Our books is called 'The Outback Travellers Track Guide' - Anne Beadell Highway.
It is available from the ExplorOz Shop or directly from our website:
www.outbacktravellers.com.au

You will enjoys the trip and it is quite interesting around the Emu area. The corrugations can be bad, but no worse than many other tracks. The SA section has a tighter track with vegetation encroaching that will scratch your 4wd. Sand dunes don't cause any need for alarm; reasonably low dunes and sand fairly compact.

Have a great trip.

Cheers,

Greg.

Hi Ben, We finished the Anne Beadell Highway on the 16th Sept. Pretty much all of the WA side is not too bad, some corrugations and bumpy bits but not much worse than you can find in the hills around Perth. The wildflowers on the WA side are lovely but we thought a bit disapointing on the SA side. The track get a lot worse as soon as you cross the boarder into SA. It is a lot rougher and more twists and turns. The section from Emu for about 100 km's is really bad and very slow going. We are glad we did not take the Jayco as it would not have survived. Parts of the track were narrow enough to keep knocking the mirrors in on both sides of the car which is a Patrol. If you are going to take the side track to see the crashed plane be very aware there are about 10 big sand dunes which are very sandy and steep with sharp turns at the top. We did have any punctures along the way on any of the 3 Patrols in our group however we did manage to break 1 rear window and 2 of us had tail light fall out and 1 had his roof rack move forward about 30cm even though we were always checking and tightening. We also had to replace the shockies on the trailer. Our fuel consumption was pretty even around 20ks p/l even though we were towing a purpose built trailer. When you arrive in Coober Pedy we recommend staying at least 1 night in the Comfort Inn it is truly an underground hotel with probably the most friendly staff we have met. We also recommend eating at John's Pizza Bar.

Any problems obtaining the Permits required I heard there are 4 different ones you need.

What is the lead time for the permits.

Thank you

Permits are very straightforward. You can get them all by email except for Tallaringa which is either desert parks pass or single park pass from DEH.
All took less than 2 weeks.

Sorry Wayne,

I forgot to add that the treck notes on this web site have all the permit details. Doesn't take very long to get them.

Image Could Not Be FoundBen,

We've just got back from the Anne Beadell. It's really an amazing desert. We went from Nullarbor to Cook to Vokes Hill and then on to Laverton. We found the narrowest part was from Cook to Vokes Hill. We completely wrecked and lost our sand flag there. We also finished up with a very scratched car, not so happy as it's only a year old, but they are 'battle'scars. Our camper (Kimberley) showed scratches too but we used toothpaste on it when we got home and it took them off. (We're now about to try it on the car!) Friends travelled with a Vista RV and that was scratched due to the narrowness of the road in parts.

We elected not to travel from Coober Pedy to Vokes Hill due to the corrugations. Two of our travelling companions travelled this route and said the corrugations were horrendous.

The Anne Beadell was wider and not so squeezy.

The scenery was amazing, so lush, beautiful flowers and generally great weather. After the Simpson the Great Victoria is a virtual Paradise.

Ilkurlka advised us to slip out via one of the roads to the Great Central as the road going on was in such bad condition. We were glad we did because it was just amazing countryside.

The WA permits came really quickly but we had to chase up the SA permits. The Spinifex Country was amazing and the community certainly makes visitors feel welcome on their land.

Cheers,
Di and Bruce

Thanks Bruce, Our permits are all sorted. Which road did you take out from Ilkurlka then? We are going west to east so need to check the best way to get on to the road. I have heard from the roadhouse that the WA section was graded in the last couple of months. When did you come through?

Cheers, Ben

Ben,

We continued on from Ikurlka. 24km from there is the turnoff to The Great Central along the Point Sunday Road. It was about 168km to Laverton once we hit the Great Central. We travelled the Anne Beadell at the beginning of September

We were told that there was roadworks at the Laverton end of the Anne Beadell and Ilkurlka told us it was heavily corrugated and rough so we took their advice.

Cheers,
Di and Bruce
