G'day fellas,
I got a choice between two cars. Both petrol 4 speed autos in good condition

- 98 v8 petrol, 4 speed auto, low kms ( under 150000), excellent condition, spotties, UHF, duel batt, roo bar, $26000
Or
- 2001 4.5 petrol, 4 speed auto, 200000 kms, good condition, roo bar, side steps, $20000.

Basically what I want to know what the comparisons are between the two are in fuel consumption an reliability. One thing I have heard about the v8s is that the are thirsty but not by much over the the 4.5 auto. Just wondering if there is any truth to that ? I will not be towing caravans or boats with this. Basically around town an the odd long trip here an there.

Hi West Coast,

A friend of mine had one of each at the same time., Big family and a two car need. They just loved the Landcruisers.

She said that economy wise the 6 was better around town but the V8 was better on the highway. Her words exactly.

I now have a 2003 V8 petrol and love it.
I say go the V8 and never mind the slightly extra fuel consumption around town. The power of it is a joy to experience.

Of course if you lead foot it you will always have your hand in your pocket.

The only complaint I have ever seen for the V8 is the fuel consumption but there is not a lot in it between the 2. I used to own a 1997 80 series 6 petrol and loved that machine also but I like the V8 better.

You could always convert to dual fuel if the economy got to you.

Cheers, Bruce

West Coast
I was just reading your post again and I would suggest that you can do better for your 26 grand.

Times are pretty hard so drive a hard bargain and you will get a better deal.

Check out Carsales dot com as there are several there for around that money. I just bought my 2003 model that way and paid less than 24 grand. So check it out. You may get better and later for your money.

After August 2002 they had the 5 speed auto and they are a nice box.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

both the 4sp and 5sp autos are strong as an ox, but for that money you should be able to get a 5sp which will be a little smoother and better plus better resale.

You've got your dates mixed up or are buying an aftermarket modified vehicle. There wasn't a v8 in 1998 AFAIK.
The v8 doesn't exactly put the 6 in the shade - the figures are fairly close. Either will do the job. The 6 is bullet proof - the 8 isn't far behind.
The v8 has better published manufacturer's fuel figures, but as stated it's hard to recreate in the real world.
I'd look at the vehicles and see what splits them in other areas.

the gxv was a v8 and had lexus type options, they were 4 speed auto and not really worth that much coin, check out lx470 on ebay or carsales, 17k at car yards for a 98 lexus, which comes std with everything including diff lock and suspension height control etc. as i said in lcool, the 5 speed is alot better, higher cruising hear ratios, etc etc...watch out for diff and front suspension issues with pre 2002

his model and year is correct, the GXV came out for around a year or so then they went back to the 6 cyl til 2002, not sure why, there was no engine issues that I know of.

DOZER I think they had the same diff all the way thru, so any problem there is inherent with the entire series. But the front suspension issue was due to the A arms not being fully welded and prone to cracking if severly topped or bottomed out regularly. I believe this was rectified around 2002.

Best idea is to go to the Lcool forum and ask there about dates

I dont think the V8 came out till later than 1998 as its a IFs and they werent around then except perhaps in the VX and Sahara's

I had a 4.5lt 6cyl petrol/gas, 5 speed manual. Fuel consumption was 5.6ks per lt on petrol and 4.6ks per lt on gas. As has been said above bullet proof motor

gooday ; We paid $ 25,000 for a 2003 & they paid as much for our trade in as we paid for it , so it might pay to shop around . 2003 on in the auto have a lot better gear shift but if your thinking fuel consumption start look at a diesel ,petrol just don't get the good fuel consumption .
our 2003 v8 auto is a great car to drive but not economical on fuel .
chbeers nick
