We too had a Sorento although ours was an 05. It had a 3.5 V6 and 5spd tiptronic box. From memory it can pull a van with a total weight which includes everything you put in it of 2.4t. The diesel was good for 2.8t. This of course is with electric brakes fitted. It was a fantastic tow vehicle. We had a tandem poptop which weighed in around 2t and it did it with ease. Fuel economy was great around 15lt/100 sitting on 95km/h. I used to cringe when admitting that i drove a Kia, but cant speak highly enough of them now.

Sorento 02/2003 to 03/2007 3.5 Petrol.
Tow capacity 2300Kg. Max Ball weight 230Kg.
Later models were 2500Kg and 2800Kg with max 10% ball weight.
The lastest models are 2000Kg and 2500Kg depending on transmission.
But unfortunately like their sister the Santa Fe, they only have a maximum ball weight of 150Kg. This low ball weight capacity really limits the size of the vans that can be safely towed.

The maximum legal loaded weight of the van is the ATM.
The difference between the TARE & the ATM is the load allowance.
That's how much you can add onto or into the van including personal effects, tools, hoses, water in tanks and LPG etc.....
