Help please.
A couple of months ago a Australian 4WD Monthly magazine included a columnists preference for a GPS system (i have had a cleanout & all my mags are gone).
Anyone recall which GPS it was & where it was obtainable (Qld. somewhere I think). Any other detail on why he rated it would also be appreciated. Thanks

In the October 2003 issue, page 105 they had an article on the Garmin Geko 101.
It was poorly written and showed a lack of understand of GPS receivers generally.

If you are in the market for a basic GPSR and are considering the Geko 101 then have a look at the Geko 201 instead. For $60 more you can run it from external 12v power or connect a data cable for waypoint transfer or later use with a PC based mapping product.
Note that I am not saying that the Geko 101 is crap just that the article indicates why 4WD journos should not do electronics or navigation articles.
I also believe that for a few dollars more you can get additional features in other units.
Personally, I tend to push mapping GPSRs as I believe they are much more useful. Starting about $1000 (with maps) they may be out of some peoples range.

As replied by
Burnie, it wasn't a very good article, although the unit for a budget GPS could
well prove its value.
It was a Garmin 101 reviewed, the article author bought it from
www.ja-gps.com.au
For what I want in a GPS it would probably do but it's biggest downfall is no audible alarm to warn of an upcoming turn.
Cheers

Thanks for the information & comments guys - greatly appreciated. I'm a complete novice; thought all I wanted was confirmation of where I was :}.
Will
check out the upgraded model though.
