I followed a B Double yesterday and notice that his break light began to flash for a few second and then were full on. I thought, what a great idea, re attention getter. but are they legal and could we have them fitted to our 4x4. as an attention getter for those tailgater's.

Steve

i think you'll find that there is a fault in the wiring somewhere and not the lights, cheers.

Hi Mark

I was behind this B Double for some time and lights were working on a regular basis as he braked, not intermittently, as a wiring fault.

I agree, have seen the same scenario a number of times, I am sure they could not have all had wiring problems on there Truck/trailer, but wether the system is available for cars, I cannot assist. dazren

Hi, I wonder if he was pumping the pedal as a warning , I always do that if some one is right behind me as a attention getter ,
Just a thought,
Cheers Des.

I have been driving semis for years...and trying to pump full-on air brakes is just about impossible I reckpn. And yes...these types of flashing for 1-2 seconds and then remaining full on brake lights have been available for a while now for large vehicles. Not sure if they are available (or legal) for smaller vehicles tho.

Cheers Keith
Nothin is ever the same once I own it ...........

Hi led flashing stoplights are available for motor bikes i have one on my Ducati
which has allso the intergrated indicators.
It flashes three quick pulses then stays on.
The intergrated indicators arn't legal but not sure on the flashing bit.
You can allso buy devices to attach to the existing brake lights to make them flash, for bikes.
But i guess if you get on google you could probably buy/find something to suit a car or truck.
A quick youtube/google found this.

Not legal

Brake lights must show a continuous light to comply with the ADR's

(additional ) flashing red lights are restricted to emergency vehicles.

Most of these big rigs have multiple lights and Im guessing not all were flasshing leaving some non flashers to comply with ADR's. If this is the case then fitting secondary units to a 4wd would still comply if you retain original brake lights not forgetting that ADR's also determine postioning of lights

The laws were changed by 2009 in most states to prevent the fitting of non compliant lights. Flashing red on vehicles is restricted to emergency vehicles(ok, and bicycles). This change back to the pre 1999 rules was was done because of the confusion caused by all the different lights that were being fitted.

I have flashing (5 seconds, then steady on) Hyperlites on my bike. I've been followed by the police in several states when using them, and have never been pulled over. In fact one policeman (in VIC) pulled up alongside me at a set of lights and asked me where I got them from. He reckoned it improved my visibility immensely.
