Hi. My mate has a Ford Explorer and wants to run a cable to charge his caravan batteries. WE would like to know the best place to tap into a line that is live when the ignition is on. (for a relay)

I've always used the Cigarette Lighter feed.

In my previous life when I had an EXPLODER, the auto electrician used the wiper motor..Quite easy to get at and is in the engine bay.

Don't use any of the vehicles wiring to feed power to an auxiliary battery. You will fuse the wire or blow the fuse that feeds it.

You need to go straight to the cranking battery to pick up your feed. You have two ways of isolating the auxiliary battery when the motor is not running. You can use a battery management system like Redarc or any of the others produce. The other way is to use a solenoid in line that is controlled by your ignition switch. They don't draw much current when they are operating so you can use any switched live circuit to operate it. The important thing is to use one with a diode across the coil or install a diode across the coil to suppress the back EMF when you switch the ignition off (that may kill sensitive electronics if you don't suppress it.)

Reading the OP he says he wants the feed FOR A RELAY so presumably hes going to use it to cut the feed from the battery when ignition is off.

A RedArc SBI12 will do that with only 3 wires being connected.... battery in, battery out and an earth.

Plus it will be a lot more reliable then a relay and associated wiring.

Regarding EMF, a battery will filter out in most cases all EMF. EMF is a bit of an urban myth and in all my years I have never come across something that has be destroyed by EMF..

I have a Redarc SB1 12 on my Ford Ranger. There is a red LED on it that is illuminated when the batteries are connected.
Most times when I start the vehicle after it has sat unused overnight, I can see the LED is still on. Why? - Because my AUX battery (120AH Fullriver AGM) is still on 12.8 or 12.9 V. The Redarc doesn't disconnect until the voltage is below 12.7 V - even with the ign off, locked and imobilised, and parked overnight.

So not sure if that is what the OP really wants.
