I have had a 2000 HZJ 75 diesel troopie for abt 6 years.

Running standard tyres, I would regularly get 600km from a tank; 650 if pushing it.

Added larger tyres - fuel consumption dramatically increased ~~ around 500 km / tank.

Recently towed small (1300kg) van from Gosford to Red Rock .. only 450km from a tank ... woeful !

Any suggestions ? Vehicle is regularly serviced

g'day traveloz, you need to travel around 80kph to get good fuel consumption, it's a pain but more time to look around! Try it you will be surprised at the difference it makes just to have an answer to your question, then you can go back to the way you normally drive knowing that. hoo roo

Are your fuel lines ok...not a blockage in the change over solenoid? Check your fuel filters as well. Injection nozels not clogged?
Could be a number of things BUT the best way to figure out is start with the simple ones and work your way up to the complicated/expensive. Maybe try the landcruiser owners forum for more answers.
I have a 1997 75 series and it has 33 inch tyres..made no difference to fuel consumption. Sit on 80klms and I get 9klm to the liter. Sit on 100 kays and I get about 6klm to the litre. Any faster and I get 5 klm to the liter. Towing a heavy camper trailer at 100klms with the aftermarket turbo I had fitted I get 5klm to the liter.

Mate,
could you give litres per hundred K's or K's per litre as your tank may show empty and still have 20 litres left in it.

used to get around 11-13l / 100km, now get around 15-16l / 100km

used tyre calculator to work out difference in tyre circumference is 54mm ..
but havent tried to calculate rotations over 500km yet

thanks for replies

11 to 13 is normal for a 1hz. The bigger tyres will have an effect on your consumption. it would be good if you could get a hold of some 750/16's or 235 85 16's and see if your fuel returns to normal.

33" tyres are asking a lot of a natural aspirated 1 HZ.

I run 285/75/16's 33 inch tyres on my troopy and here are the consumption figures with the chev 6.5 V8 diesel at 90kph bobtail and 80 kph 4th gear with the van.

Over approximately 5000k average fully loaded at 3.3 tonne. Lowest 12.3 l/h, highest 14.3 l/h and average of 13.75 l/h.

Over approximately 5000k loaded and towing a van weighing in at 1.6t. Highest 20.4 l/h, lowest 13.7 l/h with an average of 16.7 l/h.

My previous old troopy, a 1998 vintage used to use 12/13 ltrs per 100klm normally, and around 20ltrs plus per 100 towing our old Jayco.

The 1HZ tended to run out of steam pretty quick towing.

Had wide wheels and standard tyres.

If youre going off your speedo you will get a false reading, you need a gps to work it out properly.

Even though bigger tyres make the truck use a bit more fuel the false reading off the bigger wheels wont help.

Your figures are about the same as my previous 1HZ 80 series (with 440000k's on it) including towing my 5m boat at about the same weight as your van.... Bigger tyres make a huge difference - the 1HZ isnt powerful enough to make use of driving at 100 with lower revs - I had 285/75 16's on my 80 for one day before I took it back and changed back to 265/75 16's - 7.50/16's would probably give better economy at the expense (in my opinion) of comffort and safety. I now have a 100 series factory TD and it gets worse fuel economy than the 80 (I thought it would be better so am fairly disapointed and wish I had kept the old girl....). Slowing down - even to about 90 does make a huge difference with the economy...

"Any Suggestions"

The obvious one is go back to standard tyres.

Is the answer as simple as the following deduction?

Larger tyres will give you a slower speedo reading and also show a shorter distance travelled than the standard tyres to which the speedo is calibrated. 10% change is possible in my experience. If we work out fuel consumption on the distance the larger tyres have travelled would need to take consider this .

A mate has put monster wheels/tyres on his F250 and is more than 10% out compared to our standard tyred Patrol.

Of course, I may be completely wrong.

thanks for all your suggestions guys .. will follow up

I learned 5 years ago that speed (over 100 kph) kills consumption .. even with smaller tyres .. I usually drive around 85 - 90 kph ...

I'd love to put the old tyres back on (I still have them) for a trial .. but, truth is, they are almost too worn to be legal ...

Around home, I really don't care too much about the higher fuel consumption .. because of the shorter distances in local running .. but cost really starts to hurt over longer distances

thanks again to all

Kevin
