Hi All,

Well the first part of our trip is complete. Pulled into Laverton around 1.00pm WA time after our journey along the Anne Beadell Highway. The weather has been fantastic with lots of cloud cover to keep things cooler during daytime but no rain to speak of.
Track conditions are rough and corrugated as we expected. The section between Ilkurkla RH and Neale junction is a bit smoother but it doesn't last very long and soon gets back to its old self.
We spent 6days and 5 nights travelling including 2 nights at Ilkurkla RH which has great facilities including shower with hot water, bbq,a floodlight which stays on all night and firewood supplied. Fuel is a bit pricey though. Opal is $2.80 per litre and Deisel $2.70 per litre. Sure beats pushing.
The desert is in great condition at the moment, lots of birds, lizards, a few camels and even a brown snake. Lots of wildflowers, grass, bushes and trees all in very healthy condition.
All in all we are lucky to have seen it in such good condition and I am sure that I will never forget our adventure along this legendary track. If we could change one thing I think we would leave the trailer at home next time. It really is a big ask of the car to tow a trailer on a track like this and I am not sure its worth it

We are going to have a couple of days with our feet up in Laverton (Caravan Park) now before we embark on the next part of our trip up The Great Central Road and beyond.

Cheers

Good stuff Anthony. How about updating the track/road conditions section as you go through. Can't have good knowledge wasted.

Safe travels

Hi George,

Thanks for your coverage during our trip. I find it very reassuring being able to talk to someone along the way. Comforting to know that someone else knows we are out here. Talk to you again soon

Cheers, Wooly

Gday Wooly,
I was wondering if there was any evidence of fires from the past few weeks - in particular on the SA side of the border?

Hi Phil,

We did not see any fresh fire damage anywhere along the track. On the WA side closer to Yeo there has been fires here and there but the amount of regrowth makes us think the fires were perhaps 6 to 12 months ago in some areas and even 2 to 3 years ago in others. No evidence of any fires on SA side at all.

Seeing the desert like this makes me think that a fire through there would be devastating about now because there is so much grass and undergrowth around.
Alot of the track has grass both sides as high as the bonnett of our car. Could easily be fatal.

Cheers, Wooly

Thanks Wooly,

The Anne Beadell Hwy was closed for a short time last month because of fires in Mamungari Conservation Park, so it sounds like they were nowhere near the Anne Beadell Highway.

The last bunch of significant fires out there was in 2007, and before that 2002 and 2000. So I'd guess we'd expect to see a few more before the summer is finished.

Cheers
