Hello all. Im planning a trip from
Perth through
Laverton,
Warburton to Uluru then
Alice Springs. On the return leg , instead of heading back to
Perth the same way I would like to head down to
Esperance then around the coast to
Perth. Can anyone tell me what is the best/shortest way to get from
Alice Springs to
Esperance?. I have only looked on Google maps, its seems that the only options on there are to go via
Adelaide, or head back to Kalgoorlie then head south to
Esperance. Im not really interested in those options, via
Adelaide makes the trip too long, and via Kalgoorlie means I have to double back too far. Im hoping that there is a more direct route available, thanks

I would have thought that if a reasonable rout wasnt shown on a current map then it doesnt exist.
cheers

Google maps isnt the best at showing
routes off the beaten track, or unsealed roads

There is a road that goes through
Kingoonya and comes out near
Ceduna. It cuts off the Pt
Augusta corner. No need to go to
Adelaide. Then you would be going across the Nullarbor and depending on when you are travelling the whales may be migrating along the Bight. Turn left at
Norseman and then round the coast to
Perth.

did this track a 3 years ago. with 4x4 and road 20 ft van was raining some of the way. All sorts of road surfaces from sandy to rocky and salt pans very little tar only bit at start and finish. is possible if drive to conditions but be prepared to spend hours washing thick sticky mud from van.

Ross G's suggestion is a good one. We did this road from Glendambo a few years ago, and is a nice scenic drive, much nicer, and shorter, than pt
augusta.
On your way this way, be sure to drop in and say G'day :-)
Cheers
Al

Hi Grunta
You'll have to give more info;
I presume you're driving a vehicle you don't make it clear,
is it a 4Wd?
are you towing, if so what?
and so on
with this info we can probably provide a better answer
cheers

You are right Phil, sorry, I did leave out vital information. I will be on a motorbike, dual sport, so able to tackle a number of different road conditions as long as it isnt muddy/boggy, or excessively sandy. Ive done alot of travel in WA on the bike, on all sorts of conditions, but as you would know, a motorbike is restricted to where it can go compared to a 4wd. Its very hard getting relevant information from people from here as most people are either giving info based on the ability of a 4wd, or they seem to underestimate the ability of a dual sport bike. As long as I can get solid objective info, I will be able to base my decisions on that. Thanks

Hi. I suppose I'm almost an 'outsider' on this site. But I have explored Oz (Aus.)
and love it. I have done it with 'very basic equipment', not 4WD.
I have explored the majority of what this topic is about a few years back. I have a bundle of shortish, mixed quality video clips up on-line which may be of help to view.
The Kalgoorlie 'set' including the trip across to Uluru via Laverton/
Great Central Road is here:
(WARNING. I was very fortunate with the weather as it can foul things up severely on 'The
Great Central Road'. Check
well first.)
From there one can ramble through the remaining video clips to look at my other Australian 'explorations', if so inclined, or go directly to my
Esperance page, :
Good travelling with exploroz.com
Laurie.

Alice to Kal and
Esperance.....
We have just done the 'Central Road", it runs almost in a line from
Alice Springs to
Laverton, it is a fantastic drive that takes you past Ayres Rock, Olgas and accorss some very nice desert country, that is the way i would go, it is a shortcut and
well serviced, check it out on the "maps" ...... you will come down from Kal to Norsman to
Esperance ... then the follow the coast around to
Perth...........
Really no other way to do it..
Cheers
Joe

I just dont want to have to double back from Alice to
Laverton to head down to
Esperance if i can avoid it, seems like a waste to me, but if I have no other option.

I have not done this but if you can get back onto the eyre highway there are tracks through to the
Israelite bay area, then you can follow the coast up to Cape Arid, then
Esperance. So if you take the route
Ross G mentioned "There is a road that goes through
Kingoonya and comes out near
Ceduna.", then you could follow the highway and pick up the track to
Israelite bay somewhere near the WA end of the bight. You need a bloody good map and someone who has done the track to advise.... apparently its pretty rough in
places.

Since you are leaving from
perth, why dont you head up the inland hwy - cut accross through
sandstone then up to
wiluna and do the gunbarrel to Alice, then return back along the great central rd via
warburton and
laverton? That is the way we were going to do it from Kalgoorlie when we looked into it earlier this year. If you really want to stay off the hwy, when you get to
laverton, head to Kalgoorlie via Yarri rd then down to
esperance.

That actually looks like a great option Rusty- if I was in a 4wd. Being on a motorbike I think that the Gunbarrel might be beyond its abilities. I have no problem with most road conditions, but from what I have read , it can get quite sandy in some parts, trying to drag 250kgs of bike and gear through heavy sand isnt the easiest

Grunta,
Are by chance a Ulysses member? We have a branch in Alice now. What time of year are you planning this trip? Send a PM and I will give you some contact details for Ulysses in Alice. We would be interested in catching up with you in Alice if we are here.

No
Ross, not a Ulysses member. I dont want to be flamed for this, but Im planning on doing the trip in February. Yes, I realise what the weather will be like. I know what to expect, i have done extreme hot remote bike trips before, mainly up North WA. As long as i can get reliable info relative to bike riding I should be fine.

Have just returned (2 days ago) .
Perth,
Wiluna, Gunbarrel, Heather, Great Central,
Yulara,
Mereenie Loop to Alice. Returned via old Ghan track to Finke, Dalhousie,
Oodnadatta,
Coober Pedy,
Kingoonya, Wirrula,
Ceduna and back across the Nullabor.
You can cut through to
Ceduna (turn off Stuart Highway before Glendambo and cut through to
Kingoonya) then travel either via Wirulla or
Googs track. If You're on a bike, I wouldn't recommend
Googs track. Neither would I recommend the Gunbarrel from
Wiluna or the Anne Beadell from
Laverton. Your best bet would be the
Great Central Road
You will have to travel back across the Nullarbor but you can cut down to
Esperance on the Balladonia track. (turn left just before the roadhouse)

No need to go through
Adelaide. Straight down highway to
Port Augusta and then turn right to
Ceduna via
Kimba etc. Otherwise as already stated turtn off highway south of
Coober Pedy and go via
Kingoonya down to
Ceduna through
Gawler Ranges. It's a few years since I went through there but the dirt road was quite good then.

Hello all. After more research, and more negative feed back( not so much on this site), Im starting to second guess my decision to travel from
Perth to Alice in Feb on my bike. Logistically not a problem, its purely the temperature, and, because of the temperature, my safety. Upwards of mid 40s arent something that Im too worried about as such, as long as the bike is moving. Its if I breakdown, crash, etc, then the heat will potentially be causing me some health problems. I dont know.
The frustrating thing is that it seems to be a bad time of year for me to travel. Cant go up north, most likely too much bad weather, rain, roads closed etc and if i want to head inland as planned its too hot, cant win. I definitely dont want to do the south west, not my sort of thing, bores me to tears. What i really want issomething somewhat challenging, some dirt roads, although many sealed roads will obviously have to be used, remote is good,
bush camping is a plus, if i can get to see a bit of nice coastline too, that would be a plus. I have 3 weeks to spare for this. I am currently looking at other options, possibly somewhere east of the line between
Norseman and
Esperance, Im sure there is a way through there somewhere, maybe heading down to the coast if it is viable, Cape Arid,
cape le grand, even nuytsland reserve if it is viable.
Im just throwing ideas around, wondering if anyone has any info they would like to share. Thanks

For those of you who have done the
Great Central Road, what are the conditions like when there has been some rain. Does it often get washed out, closed, does it just turn to sticky mud when its wet or is it a more a wet sandy type of surface. Also, does it dry out fast when it rains in the warmer months?. Thanks
