Hello to all on the exploroz forum. I am thinking about buying a Disco 3 (Diesel) for towing my Van and also some 4wding. My van is a Maytow 24'.6" and comes in empty at 2.6t. I currently tow with my Pathfinder which does a good job ( better than Patrol 3L). Is there anyone in the forum land with a opinion on the Disco 3 and its towing ability and or its ability off road I would appreciate your comments.

Thank you in advance
Vern

Gday...

The Discovery 3/4/RRS forum at -

http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs will give you plenty of answers on the D3.
I have a 2006 D3 TDV6 SE Auto towing a 23ft 2600kg van. I am on the road fulltime for the past almost 3 years.
I was previously a "Cruiser Man" but the D3 is the best tow vehicle I have ever used. I cruise at 90kph on the highway - 13-14ltr/100km - just leaving it in auto.
Hills and head winds affect this - worst consumption has been 16.9ltr/100kph.
There are many (oh yeah MANY) who will denigrate the D3 because it is recommended not to use a WDH - but my experience over the past 3 years is that most stable tow vehicle I have ever owned.
Not expensive to service (routine) but if something goes wrong, parts can be expensive - but so are most modern 4x4s.
Make sure you check the service history very carefully before you buy, and talk to the previous owner. Most of what could have gone wrong will probably be fixed already.
Cheers
John

Plenty of reading here, but it is worth doing if you are serious about safety when towing such a big van with a tug that is unsuited to use of a WDH. Note the word 'unsuited', which is very different from 'doesn't need'.

Unfortunately there is a lot of uninformed information with respect to the D3/4 and WDH on that Caravan Forum.

The issue is discussed in detail here WDH and the Disco

The bottom line is that even Hayman Reece do not recommend a WDH for a Disco 3/4.

Gday...

All the above info is valid for consideration. However, view the following URL - many dismiss this as "marketing spin" - many just say "impossible" ...

Watch it from this point of view - No WDH - no Anti-Sway bars - the LR on the tandem is at least 2300kg - the tandem trailer probably another 700kg.

Note how level the whole rig is - and obviously how stable the whole rig is.

Find other D3/4 owners and actually talk to them ... then sort out the chaff from the wheat.

If you like I can put you in contact with a frustrated Disco owner who will tell you the real cost of running one. He is selling his to buy a Toyota to regain reliability.

And I can tell you of a few 200 owners who have recently changed to a Disco and most wish they had done it years ago - if you are not going to be constructive don't respond.

You're going to be at least on the limit with a Pathy =3000kgs/Disco 3500kgs

have look on the aulro site and register. Well worthwhile. What you can't find out there isn't worth knowing.

As a D4 3.0ltr owner I will certainly back that up, whatever you need to know is on that forum. Top tow vehicle the 2.7ltr and the 3.0ltr D4 is even better.
I have had Toyotas, Nissans, Pajeros and a Jeep and the best of the bunch so far is what I now have.
